About Visit Scunthorpe

Visit Scunthorpe started out life many years ago back in around 1995 when I set up my own web site to post messages and thoughts about what I was doing for friends to see.

Little know to me at the time, this was a phenonomen which was to become known as Blogging. Now obviously when I first heared about blogging I thought that it was a bit naff, and then suddenly realised that it was something I'd been doing for years.

Anyway time moved on, different versions of the site came and went, and the Hell Desk Challenge became the main domicle of the blog for several years.

I decided eventually to register VisitScunthorpe.Com as a domain name for several reasons, yes its a bit of a piss-take, no one else commercially had registered it, and Scunthorpe is where I was born and have lived my entire life, so I felt it fitting that VisitScunthorpe.Com be the blogosphere of one of its residents.

Things move on, and I look at and contribute to the local news paper's web site on a regular basis. From time to time some of my posts go to moderation, some times I see others complaining of moderation also.

So I think a bit more, keys turn, pennies drop.

That's it I think, lets set up VisitScunthorpe.Com to carry the main headlines from the Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph, and then let people locally comment on them without moderation.

Then I start to really start thinking, why go nicking content from other providers, when you - the people of Scunthorpe, can provide the news your selves!!

I get totally pissed off reading comments on the local news paper web site from readers complaining about typos, spellings, gramatical errors etc, so I developed the idea "Right, you're all so bloody clever - here's the tools, go write the news your self"

How do we deal with modderation? well thats easy, all articles can be commented, if enough people complain and select the "Please remove this article" option then we'll have a look at it, read the comments left by those complaining and we will remove it.

Reasons for removal will be limited to infringment of copyright by subscribers, or any form of incitement to violence be it racial, religious or otherwise deemed offensive.

Something else you need to be aware of - is that if you are in public office or standing for public office then you are fair game, look upon contributions to this site as a public barometer, you won't find polls here supporting political idologies in line with the author, all you will find if open information.

Just so you are aware in terms of privacy, we keep an absolute minimum of information, basically the data you enter on the sign up form, and the TCPIP address of every login and post you make. This is so that any abusers can be blocked. We will not sell your data, or send you spam.
