About Visit Scunthorpe

Visit Scunthorpe started out life around 1995/6 when I first started developing web sites commercially, and set up a "home page" to post thoughts about what I was doing for friends to see. This mainly consisted of questioning why councils paint toxic chemicals on cycle paths to highligh that they are "green".

In 2009 my self and some friends were disgusted at the shame which had been brought upon our town by Elliot Morley, none of us had been what many describe as "politcally active" before (though 13 years previously I had been a union officer at the college), but Morley's behaviour and the ensuing lies and deciet shocked us in to action. We ran a campaign calling for Morley's immediate removal. This upset lot of labour supporters, but highlighted to me the herd mentality that membership of any political party requires, party first, members second, community 3rd.

I decided eventually to register VisitScunthorpe.Com as a domain name as Scunthorpe is where I was born and have lived most of life, and I wanted to develop a forum / site / resource which would present an alternative to the main stream media representing the view of residents, not politicans and journalists.

My objectives are very straight forward:

  • To report regional news in an independent manner, positively reflecting the town in a style which is in keeping with the social context of the area.
  • To provide a facility by which other people with links to the region could publish their own headlines (as opposed to just leaving comments on articles).
  • To provide a forum or mechanism by which residents can get their view heard which may not be covered by the main stream media
  • To support and encourage positive steps to improve both individuals the region through communal support, friendship and action
  • To acitvely encourage residents to defend and protect what they believe is in the best interests of the region and its residents
This I realise is not to all readers taste. Mainly people who seem to be under the misaprehention that this is some sort of "Labour loving leftie blog".

I can assure you it is not.

All publications & editors have their political point of view, there are some local councillors which I work with because I respect their work within the communities, on an individual level, not their politics.

Frankly whether they are elected on the tail strings of a political party is imaterial. This site is independent of political party, just as my views are... my views, not those of a political doctoring, and therefore also independent.

Moderation, rules and boring bits

How do we deal with moderation? All articles can be commented, if enough people complain and select the "Please remove this article" option then we'll have a look at it, read the comments left by those complaining and we will remove it.

Mission Statement

Visit Scunthorpe is North Lincolnshire's only truly independent, non commercial, community news web site.

Established in January 2010 we have lots of members with a wide range of views who all contribute independently with articles of their own.

You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.

Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.

Paul. Founder Visit Scunthorpe.

How it Works

If you would like to have the ability to add articles and comments to Visit Scunthorpe then all you need to do is sign up with a valid email address for an account. This is free, your email address is confidential and we don't send out spam emails.

Once you've completed the sign up then you are free to post and comment on well... pretty much anything, we just have some basic civilised rules to prevent people from inciting violence, hatred or making individual attacks.
