22 May 2011 by Visit Scunthorpe Editors

Version 2 of the "Scunthorpe Engine" (the sexy techie bits which make this site work) will be going live over the next 24 to 48 hours.

After many hours of dedicated coding, Jake, has completed his mission to drag VisitScunthorpe.Com kicking and screaming into the world of Web2.0 with some absolutely awesome upgrades, improvements and social media interfaces.

The new site features in line photo upload with automatic resizing so you can add images into your articles as you produce them. It also includes enhanced feedback tools, email and twitter integration.

New articles are automatically posted on the VisitScunthorpe@Facebook.Com account, so if you are not following it already, get signed up so you get instant notifications of new articles as they appear.

Jake's also added a shiny new "My Account" area and has included email notifications of updates and responses to your articles and comments in an effort to make the site more interactive and to encourage more people to post and share their thoughts and views.

New features include:

  • Streamlined Sign-Up process.
  • Subscribe to new article notifications from your member area.
  • New what you see is what you get article and comment editor, including image upload and placement.
  • Automatic sign up for comment notifications when a comment or reply is made. (you can unsubscribe from your member area).
  • Create your own galleries and upload your images to them.
  • You can reply directly to the author or any other commenter with the new threaded and collapsible comments.
  • You can upvote and downvote comments to show how you feel about other commenters views. and lots more!

We hope that the new enhancements will bring www.VisitScunthorpe.Com another step up the ladder in terms of Community Journalism, and that the new facilities will encourage more people to share their news and comment on the site. As always we remind posters of our posting guide lines, and their liability when posting on the site to ensure that content is not slanderous and does not infringe copyright.

The updates are great but I have to make a plea on behalf of the lunch-time surfers that you test stuff on older browsers..

For those people that "Visit Scunthorpe" during their lunch break on their employers kit they can't always appreciate some of your more esoteric web features - many employers never upgrade there MIcroshaft products until the day support for their particular version expires, or they insist on IE6 because thats the browser their internal applications will still reliably run on. Some employers also nail down any twitter, facebook, streaming or picture upload functionality. I noticed you put up warnings when pictures do not display which is good practice - but you have recently added functionality to make the banner picture pan up or down (not on all pages though). This caused my current employers browser to have a fit and display the page in text only format - which wasn't pretty.

Mission Statement

Visit Scunthorpe is North Lincolnshire's only truly independent, non commercial, community news web site.

Established in January 2010 we have lots of members with a wide range of views who all contribute independently with articles of their own.

You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.

Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.

Paul. Founder Visit Scunthorpe.

How it Works

If you would like to have the ability to add articles and comments to Visit Scunthorpe then all you need to do is sign up with a valid email address for an account. This is free, your email address is confidential and we don't send out spam emails.

Once you've completed the sign up then you are free to post and comment on well... pretty much anything, we just have some basic civilised rules to prevent people from inciting violence, hatred or making individual attacks.
