Your favourite thing in Scunny

03 March 2011 by Family guy

Evening. Been in this town now for nearly 50 years apart from a 10 year break in London. What are your favourite things about this great town of ours? My worst memory was being at App Frod gala when Nypro blew up. My best memory was beating Sheff Wed at Hillsborough in the Cup around 1972

My favourite things about the town are : - Its open spaces. - How quiet it can be. - The cheap house prices. - The friendly nature of most people living here. Least Favourite Things - Petty vandalism and graffiti on the estates - Lack of self respect (but that happens every where) What I will say though is that where ever you go, and say "Hi I'm from Scunthorpe" there's always some one there who's also lived in Scunthorpe at some time!

I too remember the Nypro explosion, it was my birthday 1st June 1974 and we were returning on a bus from the circus which had been at the bottom of Station Road. Great memories of Family Weekends at Quibell Park. I like the towns history and heritage and dislike the distruction of some of the old buildings, although I do see the need for change and progress. What I don't like is the tribal politics we have in North Lincolnshire which seem to prevent the town from reaching true potential.

I dont know if I have particular reference points but all I can say is that moving away from Scunny makes you see it for what it is... Yeah, there's chavs and meatheads, but you get that everywhere right ? So I've been missing various things y'know, walking to work through a park with trees, wandering down to the late shopper in the middle of the night with no worries about violence or being mugged, and getting a hug from someone who asks you to watch their dog while they buy some fags. What else ? Oh yeah, decent tarmack on the roads, yes, I know, I thought the roads were awful till I moved down south where you actually need a four wheel drive with jacked up suspension just to get to the shops without losing any fillings. And you know there is decent retail in Scunthorpe believe it or not, loads of shops and a great looking high street, if you get the chance to go to other towns either near or far, you'll know what I mean. The fact that there is sites like this where people actually give a f*ck about their local area and what goes on in it. I dunno, there's loads more, a feeling of being in a village almost. Perhaps I have pink lenses on and am feeling a bit nostalgic, but I think Scunny is great and you should too!
