Young Voices Concerts

06 December 2011 by Black Flag

Last night (5th December) I attended the Young Voices (http://youngvoices.co.uk/) concert at the Motorpoint Arena in Sheffield where many school choirs from across the region including North Lincolnshire sang and danced on masse to an amazed audience of parents and grandparents. They will be doing it all again tonight and tomorrow so check it out (http://www.motorpointarenasheffield.co.uk/whats-on/young-voices/).

Different schools sing on different nights and a quick look at the programme shows many schools across North Lincolnshire will be singing. Last night I was flying the flag for Messingham Primary who did themselves proud and I would like to congratulate them on their excellent performance. I’m sure they would like to express their thanks to their teacher Mr Wales for making it all possible – a job well done, Adam.

I estimate that there was about two thousand kids singing everything from traditional folk, Christmas carols, contemporary pop, Toy Story and a Queen medley for the old duffers like myself. My favourite was Katy Perry’s Firework - when it reached the crescendo the kids went mad, dancing and singing their hearts out.

The kids didn’t just do it alone – they sang along to tracks by the Irish folk band, The High Kings (Gaudete and  Step It Out Mary) and  the exceptional vocalist Randolph Matthews (Precious and Something Inside So Strong). They were encouraged to dance by the street dancing specialists Urban Stride and we were treated to solos by the Britain’s Got Talent star Connie Talbot who is only eleven!

For those children who have got the singing bug I have to remind them that Scunthorpe has its own award winning choir (Open Category Winners - BBC Radio3 Choir of the Year 2008) - The Scunthorpe Co-Operative Junior Choir. The training choir was even featured on the CBBC's 'Take a Bow' programme.

The choir is looking for young talent so follow this link for more info (http://www.scunthorpecoopjuniorchoir.org.uk/membership-details-now-recru/)

For those who just want to enjoy great music the choir will be performing at the Christmas Tree Festival at Brumby United Church, Ashby Road on Saturday 10th December and at the Christmas Concert at The Baths Hall on Sunday 18th December.
