We reported earlier today that Vince Cable was due to meet with local MP Nic Dakin and TATA bosses at the Scunthorpe site to discuss the 1,200 job losses expected when the Queen Bess is mothballed and the Bloom and Billet mill closes this October.

The meeting started at 1:30 and lasted for 3 hours, including a tour of the site by the minister. Following the meeting and presentations Vince Cable toured the works accompanied by  Sean Lyons, site Director and also John Bolton Long Products Director.

Many thanks to the Visit Scunthorpe member who sent in the photo showing delegates leaving for the site tour.

Nic Dakin, Scunthorpe MP sent us through the following summary of the meeting this evening to share with readers of Visit Scunthorpe.

Nic said :

"I was really pleased that Secretary of State Cable spent 3 hours at Tata Scunthorpe today.

He listened to the views of management and unions as well as representatives of the wider community.

He also toured the site to see the quality of Scunthorpe steelmaking first hand and was clearly impressed with what he saw and heard.  There was an excellent presentation by North Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire Councils about both the challenges and opportunities the area faces.

We made it clear to him that we don't expect him to wave a magic wand - though we wish he could!

We do want government to look at the bids for an Enterprise Zone and Regional Growth Funds favourably.  And - if funds are available for re-skilling the workforce - we would hope they would be forthcoming.

We do want government to do what it can to stimulate demand for domestic steel by going ahead with renewable projects and high speed 2 - and do what it can to make sure that these are built with UK Steel.

We do want government to think again on their current proposals for a carbon floor tax.  And we do want government to make sure that large scale planning decisions around the Humber Gateway are progressed on a timely basis."

Mission Statement

Visit Scunthorpe is North Lincolnshire's only truly independent, non commercial, community news web site.

Established in January 2010 we have lots of members with a wide range of views who all contribute independently with articles of their own.

You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.

Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.

Paul. Founder Visit Scunthorpe.
