Update on MP Talks with TATA

27 May 2011 by Visit Scunthorpe Editors

Following his meeting yesterday with  Mark Prisk, Minister for Business and Enterprise, Nic Dakin spoke to Visit Scunthorpe last night to update readers on his meeting.

Nic told us that the discussions in his mind went reasonably well, and he felt that he was able to get acrtoss to Mark Prisk how big a challenge the job losses are for the area.

The Minister responded by stating that a rapid response unit had been put in place to work with Tata and the unions to help support those workers who's jobs were at risk, and this response unit would be headed up by JobCentre Plus.

In addition to this a task force is also being put together to work on the economic challenges facing the area of North Lincolnshire as a direct result of this cut to the Tata Workforce.

Nic told us "I welcomed these initial moves as showing the right intentions, but the actions will have to have impact if they are to be effective."

As previously reported on Visit Scunthorpe, there are real opportunities presented by the growing renewable industry in the UK which could provide jobs and investment opportunities for both sides of the Humber Bank.

Nic said "I drew attention to the need for government to find ways of developing the renewable energy supply chain in the uk. The Humber is perfectly positioned to take up this challenge - but government needs to be proactive to help make it happen."

In our previous article we also mentiond the impact of the carbon tax on the price of steel, which may affect the profitibility of manufacturing in the UK and British jobs.

On this matter Nic told us "The government can be more helpful is in thinking again on the planned changes to carbon taxes due to come in in 2013."

Mission Statement

Visit Scunthorpe is North Lincolnshire's only truly independent, non commercial, community news web site.

Established in January 2010 we have lots of members with a wide range of views who all contribute independently with articles of their own.

You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.

Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.
