Twitter power in Scunthorpe

14 July 2011 by fans64

Tweeting, use of message boards ,facebook and email campaigns are really starting to make a difference locally  as to how public figures go about their business.

Locally most of our politicians and journalists have a titter feed or a blogging account somewhere which they use on a daily basis. This has given the general public quicker and greater access to them and it's a two way street,t he public can now post a message to their twitter account and are 90% sure it will be seen within an hour or so.

The campaign to oust Elliot thieving Morley was born online several people met through Facebook and formed a small committee who petitioned in the town center and got great media coverage which ultimately forced him to step down.

As an Iron fan I have been involved with a message board for several years and have seen many of the ideas and discussions on the site acted upon by  the club ,either mentioned in the main media or actually taking up the suggestions made, they do not always react favorably, but they do react.

More  recently an email campaign was conducted by Iron Bru members about the unfair policy on broadcasting all Hull city games on the much better FM frequency with the Iron having the very poor DAB or MW reception in this area, it was an emotive subject and after only a couple of weeks pressure the BBC reacted and agreed that away games should be given the priority on FM this was a major climb down al brought about by local social media.

Most recently we have twitter and  the Ashby fish pond, all traditional methods of incident reporting were seemingly being ignored but a few people with Twitter access and a local Blogging site ,Visit Scunthorpe, created such a wall of embarrassment and public pressure the council and EA were forced to act .

Twitter is by far the quickest way yet of getting a reaction  or response. It has changed the way Politicians react, it's very public arena and is making these people more open while at the same time massively more accountable.

I think for the 1st time in my life  the politicians are truly having to serve.

Mission Statement

Visit Scunthorpe is North Lincolnshire's only truly independent, non commercial, community news web site.

Established in January 2010 we have lots of members with a wide range of views who all contribute independently with articles of their own.

You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.

Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.

Paul. Founder Visit Scunthorpe.
