Tweeting Police Man Online Q&A

21 June 2011 by Visit Scunthorpe Editors

Neighbourhood sergeant for Scunthorpe South, our very own Tweeting Bobby will be going online in Humberside police's first ever virtual forum on the 29th June.

Sargent James Main has already become very popular online getting over 1,000 twitter followers in just a few weeks having launched his twitter account specifically aimed at keeping in touch with the public more.

At the time we thought that this was a great idea, though other sections of the more traditional media took a while to come round to the idea and see the benefits (choosing to do a particularly unimaginative twitter parody instead). The same progressive forethought can be seen again in the next step on Humberside Police's social media road map, lets just hope the Evening Telegraph are more supportive of this venture than they were with the twitter launch.

Again, this is a first for Humberside Police, and demonstrates just how social media can help to forge links between the residents in the community and community policing teams.

As regular readers will know, Visit Scunthorpe is all for this use of media, having last year pioneered on line broadcasting from two council meetings, we'd encourage every one who can find the time to tune in to Sgt Main's broadcast on the 29th of June.

Modern technology is all about communication, and giving the public access to resources. These may be alternatives to the main stream media reporting events locally, nationally, or opportunities to interact with councillors, public officials and those who provide protection and service to the public like the police.

This is a brave pilot scheme that Sgt Main has embarked on, but in an interview with Visit Scunthorpe last week, Sgt Main did tell us that on the whole all the comments he receives are positive and that the project to date has been well accepted by the public.

Sgt Main said "I appreciate that many people are busy and are not always available to attend public meetings, so the use of the virtual forums provides another means of communication with the public"

Best of luck on the 29th!

Mission Statement

Visit Scunthorpe is North Lincolnshire's only truly independent, non commercial, community news web site.

Established in January 2010 we have lots of members with a wide range of views who all contribute independently with articles of their own.

You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.

Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.

Paul. Founder Visit Scunthorpe.

How it Works

If you would like to have the ability to add articles and comments to Visit Scunthorpe then all you need to do is sign up with a valid email address for an account. This is free, your email address is confidential and we don't send out spam emails.

Once you've completed the sign up then you are free to post and comment on well... pretty much anything, we just have some basic civilised rules to prevent people from inciting violence, hatred or making individual attacks.
