Tory controlled North Lincs

10 May 2011 by Michael Lewis

I write this just a few days after North Lincolnshire Council became Conservative controlled, following 16 hours of counting and recounting of results following the 2011 local elections. This article is based on a number of tweets, I posted on Saturday 7th May 2011. I am very annoyed that North Lincolnshire Council is now Tory controlled, there are several reasons for this, mainly Burton Stather and Winterton voted in Tories in a labour seat, the seat which happens to cover Elliot Morley's home ... his lying, cheating and stealing cost Labour the election. The election was held just a few weeks after Morley admitted dishonestly claiming expenses in court. But also the former Liberal Democrat councillor who after the 2010 General Election switched to the Tories, after he did so badly at the General Election as a Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate held on to his council seat. In addition the three Independents lost their seats to the Tories, in Tory areas. Of course Labour made mistakes in power, but Scunthorpe will again suffer like it did between 2003-07 under the Tories. There really is a case for changing the elections from every four years to every year, to avoid repeated changes of power, that would mean redrawing boundaries and making each seat have three councillors instead of one, two or three. At the moment North Lincolnshire is designed to beset by a constant yo-yoing of political control. Labour in North Lincs need to start campaigning now for 2015, and need to pursue the reported Tories that lied in their leaflets and on the radio, the police should prosecute them through the elections court ... re-run elections are costly, time consuming and will probably not result in a change of power, but lying on election leaflets is against the law, North Lincs Tories need to watch this space, you will loose in 2015, Labour will return stronger than before at both the local and General Elections. The Tories will begin breaking their promises on the 25th May 2011, when the council AGM is held ... I predict the confusion over FREE parking will be the first broken promise. Jobs and services throughout North Lincolnshire are now at risk, with some reports talking about as many as 2,000 jobs being slashed in the coming four years. The Tories will cut and burn locally, just like they are doing nationally. North Lincolnshire deserves to be Labour.

Michael, as you say the Tories will have a cut and burn policy locally. The Labour Party did themselves no favours by being prepared to cut and burn just the same. If the labour councillors had shown any resistance to the savagery of the cuts they would probably have been elected. Instead they were simply a dumbed down version of the Tories offering no real opposition and thoroughly deserve everything they got. I am not pleased that we have a Tory council. The important thing is that we fight to defend jobs and services, wherever the threat comes from.

I am sorry Michael, but North Lincolnshire definitely does NOT deserve the current calibre and credibility of Labour leadership and representation on offer. Now whether Scunthorpe and Labour deserve and complement each other? Best if I leave that one to others!!

Hi Michael, Thanks for the article, really appreciated, its good to have so many people sharing their views and publishing articles other than just commenting on others. You'll not be surprised if I tell you that a lot of Labour voters have been in touch privately to express exactly the same view on Elliot Morley as you have in your article. Hopefully that will all be resolved shortly, it will be interesting to see what response the CLP make (if any) as its clear that people are awaiting a response.

From his Twitter exchanges on 10 & 11 May with NLC Labour cllr Andrea Davison that even Thoades alleges that \"all sides in Scunthorpe have their crock of corrupt politicians\". I do find it intriguing that cllr Davison has not continued to challenge and/or refute his allegations as to whether she is aware of corruption amidst Scunthorpe\'s political class?
