They Rallied Against The Debt

16 May 2011 by Black Flag

The Rally Against Debt on Saturday may not have brought the capital to a standstill (estimated 350 protesters outside Parliament http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-13398966) but it did highlight the fact that over the next 5 years the coalition will be spending more than it is now and that there are still areas where costs can be cut, gold plated index linked pensions for example, without cutting the NHS or closing libraries.

From reading the blogs and sites of the organisers (Tax Payers Alliance http://www.taxpayersalliance.com/home/2011/05/rallied-debt.html and the Freedom Association http://www.tfa.net/the_freedom_association/2011/05/who-cares-if-were-10-trillion-in-debt.html ) it appears that there was a good mix of political views at the event but not many people pushed the "cutting the debt to roll back the state" angle which is a shame.

Did I go? No, bread and circuses was the name of the game for me. Seeing Man Utd secure the championship at Blackburn then watching the spectacle of the FA Cup was more important, although a Man City victory was not my favoured outcome.

Ha Ha, a good mix of political view among the 350 (an exaggeration?) people there, that's a good one. To slight abuse a favourite term of derision of your lot it was a tiny rally of the 'Loony Right'. The anti cuts movement put upwards of half a million on the street, your lot can't even rally half a thousand! Then again when you have control of the media and the means of production and distribution its not really about numbers, is it? What you seem to be advocating is a return to Dickens' time when the rich didn't have to worry about paying taxes to keep the undeserving (or indeed deserving) poor alive, or pesky trade unions organising working people collectively. The answer to a free market created recession seems to be further free market reforms.

Martin An attack on the size of the rally (not a march) is an easy hit; the resources of the Freedom Association and the Tax Payers Alliance is small compared to the TUC and the unions - organisations not averse to spending their members money in the allegedely right wing media to promote their cause and the anti cuts march. You may have failed to notice that the supporters of sound finances voted at the ballot box last year and won so they don't need to take to the streets - they are already in power. Some of us just think that the cuts are not deep enough. Notably you fail to address any of the issues in the associated links. As for your comments about taxes and the poor - in my view tax collectors are similar to extortionists, demanding money with menaces. The fact that a majority of people voted to give these people that authority is academic. My individual property rights come before the tyranny of the majority - what's mine is mine and I earned it. My family and my kids come first. If I want to give my hard earned income to the deserving poor I'll give it myself. The undeserving poor can look after themselves.
