The Pods leisure centre was joint runner up in the Award for Culture and Sport at the Making a Difference in Yorkshire and Humber Awards held in Wakefield last week.
This category celebrates outstanding contributions through cultural or sporting activities and there were seven nominations which included Calderdale Council Calderdale for their Midnight League, Hambleton District Council and Richmondshire District Council for Active Marketing, Harrogate Borough Council and their Mercer Art Gallery’s Moonlight Marvel, North Lincolnshire Council The Pods, Selby District Council for Increasing participation in leisure and improving health in the Selby District and Wakefield Council for The Hepworth contemporary art museum.
The Pods - the only leisure centre of its kind in the country - has used culture and sport to make North Lincolnshire a better place and improve the lives of local people.
North Lincolnshire Council, with financial help form Yorkshire Forward and Sport England, created the flagship leisure centre. It provides:
• Eight lane 25m competition pool
• Learner pool
• Six court sports hall
• 85-station health and fitness centre
• Dance studio
• Crèche
Cllr John Briggs, cabinet member for Asset and Estate Management, Sport, Leisure and Culture, said:
“This is brilliant news; The Pods has been very successful so far, with a large number of visitors since it opened in July.
“It has already won one regional award and was nominated for one of the most prestigious international architectural awards, so coming joint second place at the Making a Difference in Yorkshire and Humber Awards is a great achievement.”

Visit Scunthorpe is North Lincolnshire's only truly independent, non commercial, community news web site.
Established in January 2010 we have lots of members with a wide range of views who all contribute
independently with articles of their own.
You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.
Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.
