A £200,000-plus refurbishment programme has been complete at the former Mint public house in Scunthorpe High Street with the premises being handed over on Monday and it opening under a new name today (Wednesday 19th October) as The Penny Bank.
The building was opened as theYorkshire Penny Bank in 1926, in 1988 Scunthorpe businessman Mick Pogson converted the building at the corner of the High Street and Allanby Street into The Mint, a French-style brasserie. It also operated for a short number of years as The Bishop Blaise before reverting back to being called The Mint.
The refurbishment work was carried out by Innex Design for the the new owners at Amber Taverns. The 68-strong Preston-based pub chain bought the Scunthorpe venue in August for a £240,000-plus sum from Scottish and Newcastle Pub Enterprises..
As part of the new look, the company is seeking approval from North Lincolnshire Council to show films from 10am daily and plan to show films or DVDs in the premises as part of any promotional activity.
Taking up the helm at The Penny Bank will be manager Kerry Barker who had been at the Comet Hotel up until May this year, she will be joined by her husband Simon and it’s hoped the venture will create up to 12 new full and part-time jobs.

Visit Scunthorpe is North Lincolnshire's only truly independent, non commercial, community news web site.
Established in January 2010 we have lots of members with a wide range of views who all contribute
independently with articles of their own.
You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.
Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.
