The Foundry Arms 4-7-2011

The mayor of North Lincolnshire, Cllr Keith Vickers was invited to officially open The Foundry Arms in Scunthorpe’s Library Square on Saturday 16th July. The £250,000 conversion of the former Onyx bar has been the latest project by father and son team Chris and Andrew Mappouras who also run the Industry bar on Frodingham Road.

The pub started life in the early 1970s as the Bell and Anchor before becoming Jensen’s then Dr. Watson’s, Jack Dempsey’s, The New Venue and then Onyx.

At the helm is manager Denise Blendell who also takes charge of a 70 cover bistro, 350 capacity bar and a new children play area called Panderama. The play area for children is set to cost £3.50 for a two hour play session and be open from 8am to 8pm seven days a week.

However Carlton Street multi-storey car park has been closed since April after potential defects were discovered during a routine structural survey. A detailed investigation was to be conducted by the council to try to work out the full extent of the problem and officials said the car park would remain closed as a cautionary measure until the probe is complete.  At present the carpark remains closed also the public toilets which sit under the multi-storey have remained closed this begs the question as to why have North Lincolnshire Council allowed the Panderama childrens play area which also sits under the carpark next to the toilets to open.

***UPDATE***

North Lincolnshire Council have disclosed on 28th July 2011 that following a second structural report it suggests there is a potential risk of collapse and they are exploring plans to demolish Carlton Street multi-storey car park.

Simon Driver, Chief Executive, said:

"We will not take the decision lightly, but what is paramount is people’s safety. We cannot put safety at risk and that is why we decided to close the car park in April.

"We now need to explore the possibility of demolishing the car park and are fully aware that we need to be sensitive to local businesses. And should we decide to demolish, we will work with affected businesses in what ever way we can.

"The site could provide a great space for potential development that will help regenerate that end of town, and would bring a welcome boost to the local economy."
