TATA task force meets today

27 May 2011 by Visit Scunthorpe Editors

The council have this morning announced the first meeting of the National Task Force to help Tata workforce.

The meeting will be chaired by John Clugston and is intended to discuss ways in which help and support can be put in place for Tata and those facing redundancy in Scunthorpe

Other members of the task force will include Cllr Liz Redfern, Leader of North Lincolnshire Council, Marcus Walker, Head of Regeneration and Planning at the council and representatives from Job Centre Plus and the Department of Business Innovation and Skills (DBIS)

The Task Force will discuss the impact for Tata employees, the company and the wider town to identify a range of initiatives that could be put in place.

In a statement released earlier, North Lincolnshire Council suggest that support which could be offered includes:
  • Matching the skills of workers leaving Tata steel with new employment opportunities
  • Assisting in potential re-employment through local companies looking to recruit staff
  • Identifying retraining and assisting affected workers in obtaining new skills
  • Careers advice and guidance
  • Providing advice and access to funding to support the setting up of new businesses
  • On and off-site drop in sessions to support employees and provide information and advice

In a pre-written statement, Cllr Liz Redfern, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said:

“I made a strong commitment to do all I could to offer help and support to the workforce. Working with the Government, we have already set up a Task Force – the first meeting takes place today.

I’ll be seeking assurances that we will all work together to do our utmost to assist those facing redundancy. There is a range of support we can offer by working with key agencies. It is important that we get round the table to discuss what can be done and how that will that work.

“Besides directly helping Tata workers, I will be pressing the Government to support the major development on the South Humber Bank to create the largest offshore wind development in Europe – that will create thousands of jobs.  And I’ll be ensuring that we do all we can to attract further investment in North Lincolnshire that in turn will create much needed jobs for local people.”
