Super Surgery begins to take shape.

Work has started on erecting the steelwork on the construction site of Scunthorpe�s new �14.4 million super surgery.
The West Street development will revitalise that area of Scunthorpe and bring a whole range of services to the people of North Lincolnshire inclucing a number of GP surgeries, the 8am to 8pm service, minor operations as well as community services such as speech and language therapy, physiotherapy and podiatry.

BAM Construction Ltd has been placed in overall charge of the project, but local traders and decorators are being employed to work on the scheme.
Work to finish the new health centre by autumn next year is currently on course although the public pay and display carpark to the west of the site is said to be behind scheduled, it�s due be handed back to the local authority by the second week in October 2010.

Work on the new health centre, including installing the ground source heat pump, will seek to ensure 20 per cent of the building's energy is sourced from low or zero carbon technologies. NHS North Lincolnshire anticipates that construction work will be completed in the Autumn of 2011.

The future the Integrated Health and Social Care Centre was thrown in doubt when it was announced in July that NHS Yorkshire And The Humber who provided the initial funding for the project and NHS North Lincolnshire who was set to commission the centre, will be closed down. It has since been revealed the Centre will be unaffected by the closures and is set to be passed into the control of a regional GP consortia in 2013, who will then commission private tenders to take on care services.

The location of the Centre hasn�t been without it�s usual critics and detractors, some saying the West Street site been chosen simply because of the diverse mix of the local population, many who may have never paid anything into the NHS.

It's interesting to note that in the Crosby Advance Masterplan of July 2007 that this area was being earmarked for a new Public Square.
