Second Bridge Construction

29 January 2012 by Hamst

Ground work continues in preparation for a second footbridge to be installed as part of the Sustrans Connect2 cycle route through the town.

The bridge which is to span West Common Lane is due to be in position by Easter and is the final phase of the pedestrian and cycle route which runs from Burringham Road in Ashby through to Ferry Road in Crosby.

The project has seen an off road cycle and pedestrian facility approximately 3.5 metres in width along the Scunthorpe Ridgeway with the addition of new signs & street lighting and the replacement/renewal of surfacing along the route. There has also been redesign of junctions & kerbing to allow pedestrian and cyclist free-flow access over road traffic.

Last month the first bridge along the route opened over Bridges Road but had to be closed within three weeks after vandals were going onto the bridge and throwing stones at oncoming vehicles causing damage and putting lives in danger. The bridge still remains closed until a solution can be found, one idea is to install a CCTV system to monitor the crossing.

Its all well and good building this glorified cycle lane in an effort to portray a greener council, I wonder if anyone has worked out the carbon foot print of all those machines digging to make this path possible, would have not been greener to give them all picks and shovels to work with, as for the bridges looking at the landscape they could have diverted the path up the hills a tad and negated the need for them, although maybe the cyclists would have to ride a bit further but that's the point isn't it - getting fit - cycle further.
This cycle lane shows us again how inept the council planners to any thing properly, like all the other cycle lanes around Scunthorpe that either wander in and out of trees or cut straight as a die blocking old Lay-bys and the ones painted on the roads and then just fizzle out leaving the odd cyclist using it at a loss as to where to go safely (what they are supposed to be).
The majority of these traffic calming measures/cycle lane are nothing more than a knee jerk reaction by the "planning departments" to comply with a mandate sent out the the government of the time (Liebour) to create congestion in towns and cities so that when we all complain they can introduce another stealth tax - congestion charging adding further to the councils vendetta against the motorist.
Can I just add the "free flow access" over traffic on the Church lane / Kingsway junction is just down right dangerous, if you are not local (as people visiting Hospital could be) and you turn into Church lane, before you know it you are onto the raised cycle lane with little chance of reading the give way signage and possible collision with a rider who believes they are invincible on they're cycle lane, as for leaving Church lane you approach a give way sign as you would expect at a junction and probably not realise it referred to the sacred cycle lane, I would love to see the risk assessment done for this council cockup.
