Scunthorpe Youth Club on Doncaster Road was opened in 1939 but was used for two years by the Department for War before being taken over by the youth service in 1941, it was demolished in 2007 and is currently the site of the rebuilding of the Baths Hall.
Back in February 1980 the member of the Scunthorpe Youth Club made a film called The Land of Wath Quilt; it was over two years in the making and was due for screening in March 1980.
The 45 minute film was produced in colour with sound and was to have its screening at the Library Film Theatre on March 18th along with a short film produced by Winterton Comprehensive School called The Baby Sitter.
Youth Centre Demolition December 2007
The Land of Wath Quilt begins when a small group of children are sent to the countryside to stay with a family for their holidays. After upsetting the farmers wife and been banished from the house the children venture through the farm buildings. Inside a wardrode they fined an old quilt with marvelous powers which when moved aside proves to be concealing a hidden entrance to a fairytale world divided into four zones. On their adventure the children meet fairies and wicked witches in the Land of Wath Quilt.
Seventeen members of the Scunthorpe Youth Centre were in acting roles with other members being used as extras and helping with props and costumes. The indoor scenes were taken from with the Youth Centre with the outdoor scenes being shot at various locations around the area. Places included Atkinsons Warren and the grass field off Doncaster Road Hill. Further a field they also filmed at Thornton Abbey which was used as the “castle” in the film, both Appleby & Brocklesby Train Stations and also Appleby woods.
The man responsible for the film, Peter Walker a member of the Scunthorpe Cine Club, described the musical film as, “a piece of visual entertainment which includes certain elements of film-makers trickery.”
Do any readers have any memories of the film, were you or anyone you know in it or were involved in its production, more importantly does anyone out there have a copy if so get in touch .

Visit Scunthorpe is North Lincolnshire's only truly independent, non commercial, community news web site.
Established in January 2010 we have lots of members with a wide range of views who all contribute
independently with articles of their own.
You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.
Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.
