Scunthorpe Uncut

18 June 2011 by Paul Rhoades

What’s it all about?

Scunthorpe Uncut is a week old and today will carry out its first action. Just 7 days ago a small group of people being concerned about the cuts and having read the information on the www.ukuncut.org.uk web site decided that it would be a good idea to promote the ideas and concepts talked about by the uncut movement as an alternative to austerity measures.

In summary, ukuncut argue that the cuts proposed by the government may be deemed all but unnecessary by tackling the following issues

1 – Tax
Currently £25 Billion a year is lost in tax avoidance through tax loopholes. Other studies show that due to a lack of resources at the treasury an estimated £40 Billion a year goes uncollected. The total cost of bank subsidies to you as an individual tax payer is over £30,000.

2 – Banking
The tax payer has bailed out the banks to the tune of £850 Billion, yet this year alone the bankers have paid themselves £7 Billion in bonuses. A transaction “robin hood” tax on international bank transactions over £25,000 of just 0.05% would recover £13 Billion a year.

3 – War
Last week the government found £6 Million to spend on arms and ammunitions in Libya alone. The cost of our wars in the last 10 years has been over £1.5 Trillion.

So there is an alternative, the government just don’t want to pursue it.

To find out more, please, support the leaflet campaign in the town centre today, their campaign today will focus on the first issue highlighted above, Taxation. ScUnCut have received many messages of support from members of the public and even local councillors, some of which have been retweeted by them this morning.

These people are not extremists as a local MP claimed on the news just yesterday, they are run of the mill Scunthorpe people who have had enough of being mislead by the government, spoken down to by politicians and want to find a voice.

There will be a public meeting on the 24th June, 7:30 at the Central Community Centre in Scunthorpe where alternatives and the impact of the cuts will be discussed.

There will be a further anti cuts demonstration at the Council Meeting to be held at 5pm on the 28th June at Pittwood House, where the new emergency budget will be announced.

The event held in the town centre was very interesting. there were no extremists present unless you believe what Andrew percy believes, in that people who take part in these types of demos/protests/events are extremists.

i went along and took my camcorder with me. it was a samll group of people in excess of a dozen people who participated but the numbers of people who stopped to listen and join in, went up and down during the event.

if you follow the link it will take you to a short 8 minute video i put together. the sound is not very good at times but i think you get the jist of what went on.
