"Gold is for the Mistress; silver for the maid,
Copper is for the craftsmen, cunning at his trade
Good cried the baron, sitting in his hall
But Iron, cold Iron, is master of them all"

These lines from Rudyard Kipling have been cunningly borrowed by Scunthorpe Film Maker Luke Drewery, and capture the essence and power of steel making in Scunthorpe as played out in his new documentary.

In his début film "Scunthorpe Steal", Luke has set out not just to document the history of steel making in Scunthorpe, but to show the true essence of the town through the hopes, aspirations and fears of those living and working here.

The film focuses initially on the discovery of Iron Ore its export and then refinement and growth of the steel industry in the area. The film combines some excellent historical archive photography along side footage provided by TATA showing the works in operation.

The film features interviews with many local people and some fantastic shots showing different areas of the town as they are today.

With a strong narrative throughout, there are interviews with steel workers past, present and future, along with a short interview with a school leaver giving a very true to life perspective of young people’s thoughts on the town. This is all set against an excellent sound track and complemented not just by Luke's script writing, but by the outstanding videography and professional finish to the film.

The film charts the growth and prosperity of the works, the impact it has had on people living in Scunthorpe, and covers both the good times and the bad. The film concludes with thoughts about the future in Scunthorpe, all played out through the voices of local people. Most powerful are the interviews with the next generation of workers in the town, apprentices at the works looking to start their career's in the steel industry and school leavers hoping for opportunities to allow them to stay close to friends, family and their home town.

Having watched the film, you are left with a great sense of nostalgic pride as to how hard working and dedicated the people of Scunthorpe are, and a sense of optimism for the future.
