Save Brigg Skate Park

20 February 2010 by Paul Rhoades

Three Skaters from North Lincolnshire are planning to put on a series of events in an attempt to ward off the closure of the Skate park in Brigg. Why's the skate park closing? Simples my friends, money. The council believe that not renewing the insurance on the skate park would make a valuable cost saving, while removing a none essential service, which no one other than a few teenage skaters would miss! Clearly the council have little or no understanding of the use of their own services by the skaters in the area. Since pulling a similar trick with Scunthorpe Skate Park a couple of years ago, skaters now have to go to Brigg if they want access to such facilities. Its all very well saving money by closing parks like this, but little thought has gone in to the social good that skate parks do. The local police / community action team is all very well versed in setting up football tournaments for the boys, and dance classes for the girls, but having checked the "youth" box, the council has clearly given no consideration what so ever for people who don't want to play football or dance. If this plan is allowed to go ahead, then I am sure that the council will be inundated with complaints from residents about the use of skate boards in public places. Besides, lack of insurance for the closure of a skate park is a poor excuse, all the skaters I know don't have insurance and really don't care for the nanny state we've become. So come on North Lincs Council - lets keep the skate park open, you've shut the other one and generally undermined local resources to prop up while elephant projects like the baths hall and the pods, so lets have a little bit of respect for the diversity of youth culture we have in the town and support the skaters! Nick, Phil and Ryan are local skaters who use the park regularly to practice for national skate competitions, they say that if the park goes then there will be lots of skaters with no where to practice. The guys will be putting together some events to raise awareness on this issue and would welcome public support. Keep an eye on VisitScunthorpe.Com as we'll be running updates on this story.

Would the price of tea maids and free food at council meetings cover the cost of keeping it open?
