Rocket Car at College

09 May 2011 by Scunny Independent News

Last Thursday and Friday the Super sonic car "Bloodhound" mad an appearance at North Lindsey College to celebrate the opening of the new STEM academy. Bloodhound SSC (Super Sonic Car) is powered basically by a large hydrogen peroxide booster rocket, which is used to propel the vehicle up to an amazing 1,050 mile per hour. A fantastic feat of British Engineering, the car its self uses the jet from a typhoon fighter to propel it to around 300 miles per hour before the solid fuel booster kicks in. The vehicle its self is that powerful and has such a high fuel consumption rate that the "Fuel Pump" is actually a Cosworth Formulae 1 racing car engine. There were two presentations where members of the public got to have a question and answer session with the engineers before getting to walk around the shell of the vehicle (minus hydrogen peroxide rockets!!). The opening ceremony for the academy then took place on Friday 6th May and was carried out by former Labour Party Chairwoman, Baroness Wall of New Barnet. The STEM Academy will provide North Lincolnshire and the wider area with the opportunity study a Mix of both academic and vocational courses, comprising of both A level and BTEC curriculum. The arrival of the Bloodhound was an excellent opportunity to not only promote British engineering prowess, but also to high light the need for hight standards of education and training to keep UKPLC competitive and at the leading edge of engineering. Many thanks to Bill for sending in the photo and providing us with details of the car.
