Public Consultation on Leisure Services

09 January 2012 by Paul Rhoades

On Tuesday 10th January from 17:00 to 19:00 the council will hold a public meeting at the 20:21 arts centre in Church Square Scunthorpe.

The meeting is open to the public, you do not need to register to attend, not will it cost you anything. Just turn up.

The purpose of the meeting is for the council to "consult" with the public about their plans for the future of Leisure Services in North Lincolnshire.

This includes the funding for sports centres, libraries, museums and the visitors centre at waters edge in Barton.

Looking at the council's own web site, and the online consultation document available there, it would seem to me (conjuncture here guys so watch out...) that the council favour the idea of outsourcing to the private sector the running of some of these services, I'm guessing at sports provision here but could be wrong. My reasoning for this is the gradual run down we have seen of the Riddings sports centre, transfer of classes, and the fact that a closure of this facility has been mooted before.

However, Tuesday evening there will hopefully be an open and transparent debate between the council and tax payers, where we will be able to give our opinions as to how our taxes are spent locally. Because of the timing (5 to 7pm) there are several people who I know would like to attend but will not be able to. They have asked me to run a live web broadcast from the meeting which I will endeavour to do from around 4:30 tomorrow afternoon.

I will also link the broadcast in to Twitter, so that if you attach your comments with the hash tag #NLCC then it *should* appear in the broadcast and I'll attempt to get answers to (sensible) questions posted.

Check back to this page from 4:30 10th Jan for live coverage of the public consultation meeting.

Mission Statement

Visit Scunthorpe is North Lincolnshire's only truly independent, non commercial, community news web site.

Established in January 2010 we have lots of members with a wide range of views who all contribute independently with articles of their own.

You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.

Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.
