Pods Keys Hand Over

09 June 2011 by Paul Rhoades

Exciting news today in Scunthorpe as the new Pods leisure development looks to be set to be handed over to the council.

The council announced this morning that the keys to this development will be handed over today.

In a brief statement, Cllr John Briggs, deputy leader of North Lincolnshire
 Council, said:

"We made a commitment when we were last in power to provide an iconic, contemporary sport and leisure complex for the people of North Lincolnshire.

"We are now at the stage of receiving the keys from the contractors Bowmer and Kirkland. There are still a few finishes touches to be made and we need to train employees and induct gym members so they know how to use the equipment. But we should be ready to open fully to the public early July.

"The building is impressive - it is built to a very high standard and it really stands out, but without being too imposing. A Boulevard will link The Pods to Central Park, which has undergone a transformation with a new child's play area, seating, amphitheatre, planting and café.

"It will truly be worth a visit. It's a magnificent building with brilliant facilities, s
et in beautiful surroundings. It really must be seen to appreciate."

The pods will replace the existing leisure facilities in the town center making way for proposed retail development, and will consist of Eight lane, 25 metre swimming pool, Teaching pool, Six court sports hall, 85+ station gym over two levels with Life fitness gym equipment, Two fitness studios offering 50+ classes per week, Sauna, steam room and spa.

Other facilities will also include a Creche, a Cafe and Meeting rooms.

It has been suggest to Visit Scunthorpe by a wide variety of sources that the council will be reversing the decision of the previous labour group and will be closing Riddings pool and sports centre. This does not come as a shock being as the last time there was a Tory council in Scunthorpe, a similar ploy was attempted. Hopefully more details will become available about this following the emergency budget meeting on the 28th June.
