PAN Humber LEP is a step closer

27 May 2011 by Visit Scunthorpe Editors

Today Greg Clark the minister for Communities and Local Government visited hull to meet leaders of the four councils in the Humber region and their chief executives to agree the way forward for the formation of a Pan Humber Local Economic Parnership.

The Humber-wide LEP will cover all four council areas and will focus on key industry sectors - petro chemicals, ports and logistics, and renewables.

It would transpire that councils can be members of more that just one LEP, which allows East Riding Council to be part of the York and North Yorkshire LEP, and provides North East Lincolnshire Council membership Greater Lincolnshire LEP.

As previously reported on Visit Scunthorpe, a Humber wide LEP is not just favourable to business, but will greatly boost employment opportunities in the area. Readers may recall an article published by Visit Scunthorpe shortly after the government published its budget in March saying how the region had failed to gain enterprise zone status due to the lack of an LEP.

Now that an LEP is in place, it will be possible for council leaders to bid for an enterprise zone for the Humber-wide LEP. This may well include incorporating the Green Port Hull and Able site in North Lincolnshire.

In a statement released by North Lincolnshire Council, Cllr Liz Redfern, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said:

“I’m delighted that agreement has now been reached for a Humber LEP and I’m keen to get the plans moving. Today’s meeting with Greg Clark was important as it enabled us to put a strong case to him for a business led Humber-wide LEP that now has full support from all councils. We are in a much stronger position now.

“Today’s meeting was very positive. It is vital that we all pull together if we are to have any chance of attracting further investment that will benefit the Humber region. This is a significant step and will unlock the potential of massive economic growth in this region.

“Timing is of the essence and we’re confident we can meet the deadlines to implement the Humber-wide LEP - so let’s get going!”
