Oppose the cuts - Student Demo 30th November

28 November 2010 by Paul Rhoades

Following the damaging education cuts announced by the government, many of you are probably well aware by now of the malicious and un-necessary attacks currently being made by the Tories against education. For the past 15 years, education has been available to those with the academic ability to pursue it and to therefore better them selves and society as a whole. Under the new Tory plan, education will be available only to those with the financial ability to afford it. The top 10% of earners in this country buy their children out of the state system and send them to private school. Its now this top 10% which are now making decisions as to how the rest of us will be educated. We have already seen an unprovoked attack on Educational Maintenance Allowance which is of such fundamental importance to students in Scunthorpe. Our very own MP Nic Dakin spoke about this in the house just over a week ago, and put a very good case as to why this draconian cut should be scrapped. Last week saw the second of two demonstrations opposing the cuts being made by students and their supporters. The television and press made a meal of a couple of minor scuffles in London and totally failed to disclose to the public the level of outrage across the whole country. At the same time as the police were batten charging students in parliament square, other students were occupying campuses literally all around the country including Manchester and Leeds. The actions last Wednesday for the first time included 6th form and school children. This is unprecedented, as not even at the height of the opposition to the poll tax was there such a political awareness demonstrated by such young students. This goes to prove that students really do understand the true intrinsic value of education and are prepared to demonstrate to protect it. Massive public opposition to the poll tax did make the last Tory government change their policy. Public demonstration and disobedience are the only tools which the working classes have at their disposal to show their opposition to unfair and unjustified cuts, these cuts always damage the poorest and weakest in our society the most. John Leggot College has for many years been ranked as one of the most successful 6th form colleges in the country. This is due in part to the hard work and dedication of the teaching staff there. It is also due very much so to the hard work and diligence of the students attending the college who really want to better them selves and create opportunities for them selves and their families in the future. We will be covering the protests on Tuesday, and hope that all demonstrators make them selves heard as loudly as possible. We would hope that other colleges in the area join the protest along with anti cuts groups, trade unionists and other political activists who also agree that these cuts are unfair and unjustified. At the end of the day, education is of such fundamental importance that this aspect will affect the future of all. If your group or college is going to take action on the 30th then let us know, and well make sure its publicised. Extra Support We have just found out that the Scunthorpe Anti-Cuts Coalition have sent messages of support and solidarity and have asked members to support the rally. It is also being suggested by several former students that the students at North Lindsey College meet up with the John Leggot Students of the field opposite to show solidarity in fighting the cuts.
