We all hate banks and bankers, they are the dregs of society. They caused the recession and are therefore ultimately responsible for the huge debts that the UK has amassed. And despite causing the crisis, the banking sector has escaped any significant regulation so bankers are again awarding themselves huge bonuses. My Bank Manager also caused the milk to turn so I haven’t had any Rice Krispies this morning – ooh they make me so angry.
Dim the lights, Poindexter, we have a film – we don’t really, but it sounds good. We all know about debt now, don’t we? UK debt accelerated after the banking crisis in 2008 and as a result of the UK government’s £1.3 trillion bailout to the financial sector, the government still owns over £850 billion in bank assets.
The UK, that’s you and me sweetheart, has an 84% stake in RBS and a 41% stake in Lloyds TSB. In addition, the state – guess who - also owns Northern Rock and Bradford & Bingley. So these big old dogs of the financial world are almost entirely under public ownership, so why oh why aren’t these assets yielding annual income to the Government which could be used to meet social needs and tackle financial exclusion. Now there’s a question. And why aren’t they using some off this ol’ moolah to pay off a few debts? You know, just to make life a tad better for us folk who own them. And cue the well known former American President - Benjamin Franklin - who said that the primary purpose of the State is "to protect property from the majority." Cough, splutter!
Put the lights back on Poindexter and clean up the tea I just spilt. That’s a pretty heavy concept but probably one that you’ve thought about in the past – “this bloody government is robbing us blind!” And which “bloody” government would that be? Strangely enough, any of them.
About my Bank Manager: she’s actually a nice lady and is not to blame for all this nonsense. Fact is, she’s just being exploited by her bosses. Heavy concept number two and cue the song Poindexter: “She Works Hard for her Money” by Donna Summer. Oh Yes!
Now get this, Donna’s song was based on a true-to-life experience. She was in Chasens restaurant in Los Angeles and, as you do, went to powder her nose. As it was a bit up-market, the khazi had an attendant who was taking a nap. Donna startled the woman who woke up and told Donna she had 2 jobs and was really tired.
Donna, bless her, thought to herself, "Wow, she really works hard for her money." Later that night, Donna wrote the song.
“And that’s magic”, to quote Mr Debbie McGee.
There now follows some hefty explanation but it’s really, really important: the wages system exists for one reason, and one reason only, which is to exploit the labour of human beings for the benefit of a small minority of economic elites. Profit is made by paying a worker less in wages than the value of the product they create or the service they provide.
All the banks are making a profit so even my Bank Manager is being exploited. Then again, so is everyone who works for a wage.
Okay, at this point you may want to effect a voice in your head rather like Strother Martin in “Cool Hand Luke” or Rod Steiger in “In the Heat of the Night” - “now that just sounds like some god-damned bunch of Commie BS to me and all those god-damned Commies want a bunch of leftie-lovers working in City Hall, god damn”. But, ha-ha, it’s even the case in the public sector - exploited! By the government, council, or whatever. Yup, even in the public sector as they work for a wage. Eye-opener! Blimey. Err, does that include the Commie ones, as well?
Right, take a deep breath. Every time political parties have gained power in the name of the people, the interests of the people have been sacrificed to the particular political ambitions of the individuals concerned. Oh yes! But hang on, we vote for them to represent us – it’s all in the name of democracy isn’t it? Here’s a little twist: “Representative Democracy” is an oxymoron, rather like “Peacekeeping Force”, and so if we are looking for democracy it must be direct or not at all. Phew! Don’t know about you but all this is doing for me!
Try this to go to bed on: Rousseau wrote “the deputies of the people cannot and should not be the people's representatives … they can only be its servants. The moment that people give power to their representatives they abdicate their liberty ...”
Poindexter, the curtains please.

"Profit is made by paying a worker less in wages than the value of the product they create or the service they provide" - what twoddle. The worker requires equipment and raw materials to produce a finished good or service and that is bought with capital for which profit is the reward of risking that capital.
As pension fund holders we are all capitalists now.
