North Lincolnshire Council: What the hell is going

16 June 2011 by Neil Eyre

I’m going to make this short and sweet because I have already blogged about this and i will post the link.

Our council has two parties in it and I have communicated directly with both of them about the recent constitutional changes, and the one thing I can count on them both doing is presenting different facts about the same subject.

the changes to the council meetings is the main thing that they can’t seem to agree on, well not exactly disagree on but present to the public information they say is accurate when its different.

Labour say: the Tories are reducing yearly full council meetings from 8 to 4, of which only 2 can be attended by the public

Tories say: we have reduced the number of full council meetings but from 6 to 4 as it was Labour who reduced it from 8 to 6 when they were in power, oh and those 4 meetings can be attended by the public.

That’s two entirely different stories presented to us the public as fact.

Confusing? You bet your ass it’s confusing. Who do you believe? If you are a Tory supporter then it goes without saying that you will believe the Tories story and likewise for labour if you are a labour supporter.

Like many others I am a supporter of neither so this kind of information infuriates me because I don’t know what to believe.

Don't think Labour ever said the other 2 wouldn't be open to the public...BUT the confusion may be the fact that out of the 4, 1 is a budget meeting with only that on the agenda and the other is the council's AGM which is the annual mayor making, and again has no other business on the agenda; meaning that only 2 meetings per year are to debate the workings of the council, only we can't actually do that as they've taken all minutes off the agenda, no forward plan, and no questions to the Leader etc - i.e. no democratic process and no accountability.

AAAARRRRGGGGGHHHH.....

Here we go again. More godamn labour spin........

Andrea,

this was from your party. Not someone pretending to be your party or a Labour sympathizer. It was from your Labour group........The Tories reducing full council meetings from 8 to 4 with only two of those being open to the public.

The Tories told me directly. I was in the room with Liz Redfern and with Rob Waltham and they told me they were reducing the number of full council meetings from 6 to 4

you want me to say it again 6 to 4 not 8 to 4, apparently your party reduced it from 8 to 6 when you were last in power.

All 4 of those full council meetings will be open to the general public.

Now may I make a suggestion that all you Tory and Labour councilors stop commenting on the number of meetings until you sit down and give the public one godamn answer.

Can you not tell how sick the public is about this crap? You say one thing they say another. There can be only one answer.

Don’t forget Andrea that you and your colleagues can call for an extraordinary meeting of the council whenever you want and we can go to those too!!! If you voted for them we could have an extraordinary council meeting every month, you only need 5 councilors to do that.

Just stop ok. Get together with the council and come up with an accurate number then tell us and we will decide if it’s a good change or not.

i need to  make a correction:

Labour say: the Tories are reducing yearly full council meetings from 8 to 4, of which only 2 can be attended by the public

should read:

Labour say: the Tories are reducing yearly full council meetings from 8 to 4, of which only 2 will include questions from the public.

Im sorry about that error.

The tories still told me that public questions and opinions can be aired at full council meetings though so there is still that discrepancy between what Labour say and what the tories say.

So your whole argument is about how politicians need to get their facts right and you can't trust them because they spin things and get the facts wrong.

Then you get the facts totally wrong and blame everyone else when they point that out?

You couldn't make it up.

i got my facts wrong realised my error with a prompt from someone else and corrected it.

i didnt get my facts totally wrong it was a slip which i admit. i got mixed up with attendance of meetings and questions/airing views at meetings.

like i said i corrected it right away.

i have been asking them to make up their minds as to what the facts are!!!!!

if you make a mistake and rectify that mistake as soon as possible then thats fine with me but i dont see either party falling over themselves to do this with respect to this meeting issue.

im just asking for one set of numbers from the council but what we are getting is two sets of numbers from the council so someone is getting it wrong

Why don't you just ring the council's officers rather than the politicians.  Three minutes on the council's website and I found that there used to be six meetings and now there's going to be four.  If you go back long enough there were more.

I went to a full meeting of council once a few years back and I'll never go again - it's a complete bun-fight that makes PMQs look mature, achieves nothing and wastes our money.  The only "members of the public" who speak are party stooges asking questions drafted by the parties.  The number of meetings isn't the important thing - the lack of ability to work together, or debate productively is.
