New Scunthorpe Market to be put on hold

06 June 2010 by Scunny Independent News

The North Lincolnshire Cabinet will meet this week on the 9th June to discuss the adoption of a proposal made in a report by the Service Director of Asset Management and Culture that the proposed redevelopment of a new market for Scunthorpe should be put on hold for at least one year after the current review of Markets being undertaken. The recommendation reads "That should there be no progress with the development of a new custom built Scunthorpe Market within one year of the North Lincolnshire Market report being approved, this panel re-visit this review, with particular focus on enhancing the existing Scunthorpe Market." This basically means no new market for Scunthorpe, yet the same report also puts forward a recommendation for improving the faade of Ashby Market, contains a 20,000 marketing budget and 25,000 worth of funding for feasibility studies! On a more positive note, the council have identified that the majority of stallholders on the market are white, and that more should be done to encourage members from minority communities to open stalls there and subsequently shop on the market. Recommendation 18 reads "That the market management engage with the black and minority ethnic communities as well as the new communities to encourage markets to better reflect North Lincolnshire's growing diverse communities." It would be nice to see the market up to its strength of the 1980's again, I remember many "happy??" hours there, and the choice and value was outstanding, it would be nice to see it re-vitalised again, not with marketing budgets and feasibility reports but with cheaper rents to encourage more stalls!

It's terrible that this project has been shelved, many market traders are struggling and were reliant on this development to help boost the town centre . Successive councils have been compliant in the dismantling of the market in Scunthorpe and this could be the final nail in the coffin. It's also a disgarce taht the council give in to pressure from the Travelling Circus "farmers Markets ,French Market " to give them prime spots instead of utilising these events to boost trade in the market itself, teh outdoor market has many empty stalls and is ignored while these travelling showmen get prime town centre spots ????? Are the livelihoods of the market traders being sacrificed for Kirk's vanity projects?

Very True Fans64. Thing to remember is its only a proposal, you've got till the 9th to change your councillor's mind and get them to reject the proposal!
