Retail in the town could be set to receive another boost as it has emerged national outdoor leisure activity trader Go Outdoors could be set to move into the town.
The Sheffield based company, which has 30 stores nationwide, could be set for a move into the former Matalan site on Dudley Road if planning consent to remove a number of trading conditions is approved.Estate agents Savills, on behalf of Ambassador Holdings Limited, the owners of the retail unit, have applied to local planners to remove conditions placed on the site in 1993 that limits occupation of the unit to the Matalan Discount Club and permits sales to members only.
Go Outdoors are a retailer that specialise is selling a range of outdoor equipment from coats & jackets, caravan & camping accessories, climbing gear, fishing equipment to running clothes and horse riding equipment. Large retail warehouse space like the former Matalan unit is required to display the wide range of products sold by the company. The retailer also operates a membership scheme where registered members receive a discount on purchases.
Through the planning process a number of sequential tests were conducted of other sites within the town including the empty TG Hughes building and the former Leisure Centre & multi-story car park site but were deemed unsuitable to the needs of Go Outdoors for various reasons.
It was concluded that the former Matalan site, which started life in the early 1980s as Texas Homecare, was the only suitable unit for Go Outdoors in the town. A decision whether to remove the conditions by planners is expected by September.
When questioned about the proposed new Scunthorpe store a spokesperson for Go Outdoor said "we don’t have any official information to hand out in regard to a store in that area at the moment."
