NLYL Inaugural Meeting

25 March 2011 by Paul Rhoades

This evening a group of students and supporters met in a coffee bar in Scunthorpe to hold the inaugural meeting of North Lincolnshire Young Labour. The group consisted of mainly students from the local 6th form college who formed the group with the objective of giving younger voters more of a voice in the local Labour movement. Their spokesperson and co-founder Lawrence Rayner, who also holds the post of Youth & Student Officer in the local Scunthorpe CLP told Visit Scunthorpe: "The main feel from the meeting was we want a stronger young labour voice and we we feel students are being given a bad image in the eyes of the public because of the press coverage, or lack of, that we receive." Another major topic for students locally is the question of how they can afford to study following the government scrapping Educational Maintenance Allowance. Lawrence told us "Obviously, we were concerned about EMA and tuition fees and feel that students are being unfairly picked on." This is hardly surprising when bankers bonuses this year have topped 7Billion yet tax payers in North Lincolnshire face a 19Million cut in funding from government. Andy Clark who is currently studying away at Loughborough University and Emma Donaldson who lives and studies locally. Emma will be standing in North Lincolnshire in Barton, and is the youngest prospective candidate in the North Lincolnshire region. Emma hopes to capture the youth vote in the Barton area and to encourage young voters to make the effort to turn out on May the 5th. Any one wishing to joing the group can do so through their web site www.northlincsyounglabour.co.uk or their Facebook Group "North Lincolnshire Young Labour" Some members of the group will be attending the March for the Alternative in London tomorrow. There is a second march in Scunthorpe scheduled for the same time. Both marches will be covered by a live feed on VisitScunthorpe.com, people attending either march can share their comments, photos and videos on the live feed using the twitter hash tag #NLDemo

Mission Statement

Visit Scunthorpe is North Lincolnshire's only truly independent, non commercial, community news web site.

Established in January 2010 we have lots of members with a wide range of views who all contribute independently with articles of their own.

You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.

Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.

Paul. Founder Visit Scunthorpe.
