NLC Highways department

29 May 2010 by The Voice of Reason

Good old NLC highways dept. keeping up the usual consistency of no consistency, they must just pull both the locations and "traffic calming measures" out of a hat, Oh its Burringham road this time oh and a Pelican crossing next to a roundabout - brilliant, I just love Berkley Circle so easy to get on, Silly little Islands at the side of the road to make you swerve into on coming vehicles - thats safe and then Speed humps. Whilst I dont condone speeding in a residential area, if the legal speed limit is 30mph why do they place speed humps in the road that prevent one from doing so, especially a commercial section of a road say like Cottage Beck, if it is deemed necessary to reduce speed in an area then place a 15 / 20 mph limit in it, if not then get rid of the speed hump, the silly little islands and get traffic flowing, but then I remember NLC dont want that, they have told by the previous Government (good riddance) and their Global warming scare mongers to create congestion so as to prise us out of our cars and on to buses or bikes, I suppose its so we can use all the cycle and bus lanes they choking the town with, just so they can justify their jobs. Question for the highways dept. which is more fuel efficient (green - if that helps you understand) a vehicle travelling at a constant speed or one that is stopping and starting? you know climbing speed humps or just sat in queues of stationary traffic wasting fuel because some faceless moron thought it would be a idea to mess with traffic light timings so about 5 cars can move at any one time instead of opposing streams flowing at the same time with a filter light for those turning right. Why is it that a perfectly functional dual carriageway - a Major route the A18 - has been fiddled and fannyed about with so that it now resembles slalom course for the Olympics, god knows why they bothered erecting Speed camera signs your lucky to reach 25mph before changing direction never mind 40. I just hope the highways dept. dont organise NLC's Xmas party, they'd be calling last orders before they all got in the place, piss up in a Brewery I dont think so do you.

I've often wondered at the amount of roadway obstacles...my conclusion is that its good for the economy, more speeding up and slowing down equals more petrol, more brake replacements. Lumps in the road equal more suspension bits and bobs and of course the cost of purchasing the obstacles and fitting them too... its all money rolling around the economy and thats a good thing right ?

Excellent contribution, I for those that haven't noticed yet am a bit of a greenie, and I cant help but concur that reduced speed limits would not only help save fuel, but it would also remove the need for the massive carbon footprint that these "Calming measures" cost us as they are put in place. I always view environmental improvements in terms of net gain, for example does slowing down motorists with traffic calming measures balance out the cost of putting them in place? I don't think so! In terms of public safety traffic calming measures add to the complexity and concentration required by the driver, where as a reduced speed limit with some of those little cameras that show your speed back at you would in my opinion have a more positive impact both environmentally and from a health and safety perspective too.
