N.E. Lincs Man Charged with Incitement

17 August 2011 by Paul Rhoades

A 21 year old man from Grimsby has been charged under the Serious Crime Act for encouraging or assisting the commission of violent disorder.

Martin Hartshorn of Grimsby has been accused of posting messages on Facebook encouraging people to riot following the disturbances in cities around the country on 9th August.

Mr Hartshorn was granted bail, but this was appealed by the prosecution resulting in Mr Hartshorn being held in custody.

A committal hearing has been arranged for 28th September.

This may be of interest to some readers as its not just occurred fairly closely to Scunthorpe, but also as it may give food for thought and indeed discussion at the public debate being planned for next week to discuss the causes and impact of the riots by North Lincolnshire Coalition of Resistance.

As soon as we have confirmed dates and times for this we'll let reader's know, in the mean time, what are your thought's on Cameron's "Fightback" are the courts getting the balance right, or are some of these punishments political in their nature?

I thought the judiciary were independent - the executive may make sentencing guidelines but it is the judges that decide and they have the discretion to vary sentences. My anecdotal evidence is their is little or no sympathy for rioters and looters and even the new harsher sentences are deemed too lenient. I believe the judiciary are responsive to that mood and I see no political interference.

You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.

Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.
