Local boy opens new Asda Supermarket

23 May 2011 by Visit Scunthorpe Editors

Scunthorpe boy, Ben Morrison, 12, officially opened one of the first new concept Asda Supermarkets today (Monday 23 May) on Carlton Street, Scunthorpe.

Opening1Ben and his mother were invited to launch the store by manager, Ken Mossenenear, and Asda colleagues who have all transferred from Netto, which previously occupied the site.

As part of Asda’s commitment to building strong links in the community, colleagues at the new store have donated £800 towards the purchase of a specially designed tricycle for Ben, who suffers from cerebral palsy.

Ken Mossemenear said:

“It was lovely Ben and his mum were able to help us celebrate the opening of this new supermarket.

“All of the colleagues here felt passionately about who they would like to see receive our support and we’re thrilled we were able to help put towards the cost of a vital piece of equipment for Ben.  “It’s also been really exciting being involved in this new project for Asda as today marks one of the first stores to be converted from a Netto into an Asda Supermarket.  Our new store will now stock more than 10,000 grocery products, around four times the number of products previously sold at Netto, enabling customers to complete a full weekly shop.

”The new team here has worked extremely hard ahead of opening and I can’t thank them enough for ensuring the opening day ran smoothly.”

Ben's mum, Miss Sarah Smith, added:

Opening2“It was a real honour to be asked to open the store today.  I know Ben was really excited about the opening and it was lovely to meet the team – old and new – who will now be working at the store.

“I also want to thank the colleagues for their generous donation towards the tricycle for Ben.  I know I can speak on behalf of Ben when I say we’re really grateful for Asda’s support.”

Members of the local community will be holding a fundraiser for Ben at, The Mallard Pub on Friday 3 June.  Tickets are £5 and all money raised will go towards helping purchase the tricycle.

Visit Scunthorpe is North Lincolnshire's only truly independent, non commercial, community news web site.

Established in January 2010 we have lots of members with a wide range of views who all contribute independently with articles of their own.

You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.

Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.
