Is Nothing Sacred?

03 July 2010 by Paul Rhoades

Now a lot of you will know I'm nether a big football fan, or a fan of our local council, but bare with me on this, as I feel its very important. At the start of the World Cup NLC decided to set up a display in the gardens outside Pitwood house, showing a St George's cross planted in flowers. Now I quite liked this, I think its good to see the likes of NLC actually being proactive in supporting a bit of National Pride by displaying the St George's cross in public. So to see the local council actually displaying the cross is such a manner is in my mind only right, and goes a long way towards supporting the common man in being proud once again of their sense of identity. Last night this flower display was vandalised. I'm utterly disgusted by this total lack of respect for our local environment and the efforts made by NLC. Don't get me wrong, I'm not sitting here promoting the good of our local council, far from it; just look at the 250,000 "Road Improvements" 100 yards away from Pitwood house and tell me that's money well spent? However, when the council do something good I think it should be supported and respected by the community, not destroyed and vandalised. I completely fail to understand why some drunken (I assume) idiot(s) should take it upon them selves to vandalise what I thought was a very proud and cleverly designed flower display. Yes I know its only flowers, but please, we all live here, we all enjoy where we live and I honestly think that some morons in the community totally fail to understand just how good they do get it in Scunthorpe. These idiots should take a trip to some other similar sized towns in the North and then realise just how good Scunthorpe really is, how clean it is and what efforts are made to provide us with a safe, respectable environment. It's like the idiots who have recently taken to setting fire to the old willow trees on Bull's field in Bottesford. It's a total lack of respect for their own environment, which suggest to me those perpetrating this senseless acts have a total lack of respect for them selves. The environment is here for all of us to share, and regardless whether you as an individual feel that its good or bad, nothing gives you the right to go around smashing it up, setting it on fire and spoiling it for the rest of us. You don't like it here? You can always leave, but stop spoiling it for us that do! Display destroyed by Vandals

Hear, hear I agree. All shades and forms of vandalism and the distracting and demoralising effects on residents and communities are to be deplored and condemned. The total lack of respect for public and private property and our environment are creeping everywhere, even into the villages and our open countryside. Not only the soul destroying petty vandalism of vehicle and property damage, spray paint graffiti, fly tipping etc by mindless village idiots. But lets not forget the irresponsible despoiling and 'vandalism' of our countryside and our rural amenity and skylines by devious, selfish and greedy landowners, developers and inept local planners. If only they would set an example, send out the right messages and stop spoiling it for all of us. Some of us don't like it, cannot risk our chosen rural amenity and assets and will certainly leave at the next available opportunity just as soon as the economy and market conditions allow?!

the main problem with this town is the council chucks loads of money at building and projects but does no real work in fostering a sense of pride and togetherness the town. Also community sentencing should fit the crime,if you wreck a garden you do a week's gardening for free etc,not just litter picking which just creates a sense of injustice and no real sense that the person is paying for the offence, let's face it he won't wreck another flower garden ,or let his mates, if he created it and was proud of his work?
