Membership is free, and is open to any one who would be interested in supporting our views of campaigning for the conservation of the pond.

Organisers of the meeting have said "We would encourage any one who lives in the area, or has used the pond either recreationally for fishing, or just enjoying the nature the pond supports to get involved and lend a hand"

The group will be campaigning for the conservation of the pond, but would also be prepared to get its hands dirty in terms of raising funds and carrying out work to get the pond re-established.

Organisers hope that the Friends of Ashby Pond group will also capture the imagination of local anglers who have been so proactive in getting the fish removed and action from the council on this matter.

Any members of the public requiring further information can join the facebook group "Friends of Ashby Pond"

Alternatively if you are not on facebook you can post comments or questions on this news story here.

There is also a poster available, which organisers are asking members of the public to download and display in local shop windows, homes and work places.

A spokesperson said "The concrete pond has been a feature of Emanuel Back for many years, and for the last 20 years it has been viewed by parents as a safe place for children to learn to fish, away from the dangers of Ashby Ville.

This group is not just about fishing though, despite its aesthetic value, the pond now forms an important part of the local eco-system and has been home to may generations of ducks and swans which each year raise families on the pond.

If people can not get to the meeting then they can still be involved as we'll be launching an online petition on the council web site next week, and will keep members up to date through both the facebook group and the Visit Scunthorpe web site."

I think its great that people finally realise what a nice little haven this site could be, As said its safer for children to learn and its within reach of plenty of youngsters armed with the gear on their bikes which was me 20 years ago! I really do hope we can turn it around and create an atractive, safe and healthly enviroment for the anglers also the people that visit for the other wildlife it boasted like the toads every year and the beautiful swans which had been coming for at least the last 5 years.

With real management and commitment from locals and the council it can be a lovely little retreat just down the road.....

Visit Scunthorpe is North Lincolnshire's only truly independent, non commercial, community news web site.

Established in January 2010 we have lots of members with a wide range of views who all contribute independently with articles of their own.

You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.

Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.
