Friends of Ashby Pond

04 August 2011 by Paul Rhoades

A new group has been formed called "Friends of Ashby Pond" on facebook with the objective of creating a single point of focus to allow local residents in Scunthorpe to share their opinions and discuss the future of the now disused concrete pond.

The group has been set up at the request of Visit Scunthorpe readers who have emailed in wanting to be able to discuss the possibility of forming a board of trustees, or residents group to look after the pond.

It has been suggested that some of the £120,000 Charter Trustees fund may be put towards the repair and upkeep of this council owned lake.

The Charter Trustees receive their funding from an additional tariff on the council tax paid by residents of Scunthorpe to fund projects and events of interest to the town.

The Charter Trustees are currently looking for ideas to celebrate 75 years of Scunthorpe, a party has been suggested, but several anglers, residents and walkers who use the pond on a regular basis have suggested that the Trustees give consideration to repairing the pond for future use and using this as a "celebration" of the forming of the town.

I've put together the face book group as its the kind of thing which lends its self more to social media rather than a web site, I've also linked into the group all the articles about Concrete Pond on Visit Scunthorpe so there's a fairly recent history. I've lots of photos to add, and hope others do now showing the pond both now and in the past.

In the mean time, get inviting people to join the group and then we'll see if we can get some kind of structured discussion going on on the group. If there's enough positive interest then we'll make some proposals to the council, charter trustees etc. Similarly if any one is aware of any other groups in the area that would either be better placed to move this forward then please, give us details, get them in contact via the facebook page.

If nothing else then this attention will focus the council into either making the area safe (ie filling it in) or repairing it sooner rather than later.

Go join the group, and please... invite your friends...

Mission Statement

Visit Scunthorpe is North Lincolnshire's only truly independent, non commercial, community news web site.

Established in January 2010 we have lots of members with a wide range of views who all contribute independently with articles of their own.

You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.

Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.

Paul. Founder Visit Scunthorpe.

How it Works

If you would like to have the ability to add articles and comments to Visit Scunthorpe then all you need to do is sign up with a valid email address for an account. This is free, your email address is confidential and we don't send out spam emails.

Once you've completed the sign up then you are free to post and comment on well... pretty much anything, we just have some basic civilised rules to prevent people from inciting violence, hatred or making individual attacks.
