Foundry Arms to be Reinstated

06 January 2012 by Paul Rhoades

According to a press release issued by North Lincolnshire Council this afternoon, the Foundry Arms public house is to be reinstated following the demolition of the adjacent multi story car park.

Readers may recall an earlier article submitted by Hamst a couple of weeks ago saying that the future of the pub was uncertain http://www.visitscunthorpe.com/ScunthorpeNews/Headline/Uncertainty-About-Pubs-Future

This article created an outburst from a member of staff at the council claiming that the pub was a haven for all "All day boozers and tattooed Chavs" http://www.visitscunthorpe.com/ScunthorpeNews/Headline/Council-Officer-Brands-Disabled-Families-CHAVS

Within the last few minutes, the council have announced that work demolishing the car park has now been completed, and that some semblence of normality will now return to the area. It has been suggested that in the short term the area where the car park was will be grassed over.

The central library will also re-open after a seven week closure due to the demolition work.

The statement then goes on to say that the council have agreed to reinstate the foundry pub "subject to the terms of the lease"

In a brief press release this afternoon, Simon Driver, Chief Executive of North Lincolnshire council said

“The car park had to be demolished for safety reasons.  This work is now complete and we will open the library from Monday where it will be business as usual.

“We will also reinstate the pub and continue our dialogue with affected parties,  subject to the terms of the lease.”

The council have also stated that while there are no immediate plans for the site where the car park stood, the council would consider it a prime development site. Having recently approved planning permission for a large out of town retail park, one has to wonder whether Scunthorpe would have the capacity to support further retail or business investment and just how long in to the "immediate" future the site may stand vacant.

UPDATE

The following statement was released by the Foundry Arms on Friday Evening

Dear friends,

We attended a Council meeting very late yesterday where we were told by the Councils Officials that the council were willing to rebuilt, refit & reopen The Foundry Arms incorporating the Pandarama Playzone & Nemo Sensory centre.

We have been assured that all will be put back to original condition as when it was initially opened by the Major.. We are delighted with the council decision & the fact that sometime in the future we can bring back the facilities & benefits to the families of Scunthorpe. Something we knew was badly needed & of benefit to all..

We were also reassured that the ongoing investigation regarding previously said Manager will continue & will not be treated lightly, that we would be informed of the outcome the investigation once completed.

I am so proud of our face book friends who helped us with this achievement & to certain individuals & organisations who not only supported us but who gave us the extra strength to continue during our more darker times.. To them, we say a very sincere Thank You.. I hope we can soon welcome you through our doors and will keep every one updated..

I'm sorry this news is a little late but we agreed with the Council to wait till their official announcement was released.. This is a wonderful start to this year showing what Community Spirit can do, let hope that Scunthorpe grows with these virtues..
