Concerns heightened over the weekend with the fate of hundreds of fish that were starting to perish in a pond in the Ashby area of the town.
The pond near to Ashby Ville, between Lakeside Parkway and Emmanual Beck has seen the water level drop in recent weeks due to the lack of rain; it has now become so low that the pond is suffering from a lack of oxygenation causing the fish to suffocate. The remaining fish are now swimming in sludge and what very little water that’s left.
The ponds water level is now at a critical point.
Local anglers and residents were there on Sunday trying to catch the remaining fish but this proved to be difficult due to the sludge in the pond basin. The Environment Agency had been informed of the situation but was unable to attend because ownership of the pond could not be established. A plea was even made for any local farmers with pumps to help out but assumedly due to the laws of water extraction none were forthcoming.
Today the pond remains at a critical level, there are up to 100 dead fish, maybe more, and as yet no one from any authority has been seen at the site though residents say some of the fish have managed to be caught and transferred to a larger pond at Ashby Ville.

Visit Scunthorpe is North Lincolnshire's only truly independent, non commercial, community news web site.
Established in January 2010 we have lots of members with a wide range of views who all contribute
independently with articles of their own.
You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.
Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.

What an absolute shameful bunch of Job worth’s we have running the show.
I rang the environment agency a few weeks ago about illegal fishing in the beck and they came up with similar nonsense.
Why can't some one just get down there (perhaps with a fire engine??) and get pumping water out of the beck and into the pond?
Or is that beyond the wit of man and bureaucracy?
