Festival Gardens Attacked with Paint

03 November 2010 by Hamst

Whilst going through Festival Gardens on Monday I can across an act on what can only be described as mindless wanton vandalism. Two of the benches that have been provided by North Lincolnshire Council in the gardens for people to sit and enjoy the floral displays have been daubed with paint. Not only did those who saw fit to carry this act attack the benches they also splashed paint all over the path that meanders through the gardens. Vadalised benches at Festival Gardens, Scunthorpe. 1-11-2010 on Twitpic Paint splattered Festival Gardens Im no fan of graffiti artistes although a lot of their work, I have to admit, is pretty good, in fact some of it I find quite amazing. However, what I came across in Festival Gardens was nothing more than a shear act of criminal damage, spoiling the aesthetics of the area for the townsfolk. Some youths go around armed with a marker pens to write their Tags and scrawl the ditties, graffiti artistes go armed with spray paints to create their ideas, yet it seems the perpetrators of this act happened upon a tin of paint and decided it would be fun to splatter the contents all over the benches and paths. Festival Gardens run along Ashby Road from Brumby Wood Lane to the entrance of Pittwood House. They were opened in 1951 to celebrate the Festival of Britain by General Sir Richard Gale, Commander of the 6th Airborne Division on D-Day. The Pods Sports Academy is currently under construction nearby and part of the gardens nearest the entrance to the Pods has just undergone new landscaping although the path there has yet to have its final surface. This is the second time the gardens have come under attack this year, in July Thoades reported the St George's Cross planted with flowers at Festival Gardens, outside Pittwood House, had been attacked. Its hoped that by the time the new Sports Academy opens next year that these gardens will be in their entire unspoilt splendor. I have reported the problem to North Lincolnshire Council via their online reporting system so hopefully the area should soon be cleaned up.

Couldn't agree more, I went through there yesterday afternoon and saw the damage. I really can't abide this kind of stupid and pointless vandalism, you may recall that the england flag was vandalised in the same park earlier in the year. I really do wish that people would take a moment to stop and think, but I guess that those responsible lack any form of self respect, so how can we expect them to have respect others or for their own environment?
