European Bailouts and an EU Referendum

19 October 2011 by Black Flag

The UK Coalition government recently increased our commitment to IMF funding from £10.5 to £19.7 billion to bail out overspending countries such as Greece and other struggling Eurozone countries. This increase is almost as much as the cuts made to our own UK budgets. Why are we funding the deficits of other EU states with cuts made from our own budget? This nonsense has got to stop and the sooner we cut our ties with the EU or at least seriously renegotiate our relationship with it the better.

The pressure from cross party groups such as the Peoples Pledge have secured a debate in the House Of Commons on having an EU referendum.
The motion to be put to the House of Commons next week reads:
"This motion calls upon the government to introduce a bill in the next session of Parliament to provide for the holding of a referendum on whether the UK should remain a member of the EU on the current terms, leave the EU, or renegotiate the terms of its membership in order to create a new relationship based on trade and cooperation."
I urge the people of Scunthorpe to contact their MP Nic Dakin and urge him to support the motion. Either write to him at the House of Commons or do it online via www.theyworkforyou.com/mp/nicholas_dakin/scunthorpe

Nic is holding a people's panel event this Friday at "the house" on ashby Rd from 7pm. If you'd like to go and take place in the open forum, ring his office to book a place.

We really need a big turnout for this.

It does not get any easier to access our MP and let him know how we feel about this motion in Parliament.

I could do a big speech and talk about how important our democracy is but the fact of the matter is most people just don’t care or can’t be bothered! They are happy with the status quo. Here is the biggest argument for getting out.

If you are against the cuts then you should want out of the EU because it would save us £118 billion a year.

 http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/6198708/EU-costs-Britain-118bn-a-year.html

That’s nearly £2000 per person. It makes no economic sense to remain. The political elites excuse that is always pushed out is the trade argument but just because we leave the EU doesn’t mean the people we trade with in Europe will all of a sudden stop. The same companies will want what we produce and we will still want what they produce. Its call the free market and has nothing to do with political affiliation.

Please, turn out at the panel on Friday and demand that Nic Dakin votes yes on Monday when the motion is put to the house. It should be our decision not the parties.

I had the pleasure of attending Nic Dakin’s People’s Panel which is worthy of a posting in its own right. Credit to him for listening to a variety of cross party views on the chosen topics of <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Europe, the economy and the NHS and credit to the panellists who politely bit their tongue when I espoused a healthy dose of Austrian economics and free market competition for the health service and the country in general. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

The matter in hand however was to persuade Nic to vote for the proposal in Monday’s parliamentary debate; he and several panellists failed to see the connection between the state of the economy and our membership of the EU. The point of making cuts in our own budget is to reduce our deficit, not to prop up ailing euro zone economies like Greece through back door IMF loans. The only time anyone did make a connection between the EU and the economy was when a panellist rolled out the hoary old chestnut about withdrawal being bad for trade.

Nic’s defence of his position was that he stood on a platform of not needing a referendum on our relationship with the EU at the last election and he was obliged to stick to it which is basically poppycock. It is a back bench debate and he has no shadow cabinet post which demands collective responsibility although his recent promotion to junior whip may be the real reason his hands are tied (http://www.thisisscunthorpe.co.uk/Scunthorpe-MP-Nic-Dakin-wins-junior-whip-role/story-13530059-detail/story.html). He did say he was amenable to public pressure so I can only suggest any eurosceptics write, telephone or email him before Monday.

UKIP are joining the People's Pledge in organising a mass Lobby of Parliament on Monday starting at 12.00 in
Parliament Square
(College Green), and carrying on throughout the afternoon while the MPs debate the motion inside. If you are working in the big smoke on Monday go along and give your support.
