Emperors new clothes

27 September 2010 by Paul Rhoades

Some readers may recall the article published on this site shortly after the election which said that if the Labour Movement stood any chance of being electable again then it must go back to its roots. Some of you will recall the reaction to this from local politicians and bloggers, by which Visit Scunthorpe was branded as wrong or at very best controversial. Despite this, its very interesting to see that our local councillors, CLP and MP chose not to back Ed Milliband, but instead to back David Milliband. Talking to people in the town its become clear that people's impressions of the current labour movement are at an all time low. In order for the Labour movement to stand any chance what so ever of avoiding anything short of a landslide kicking next May, the Labour party must become representative of the working classes. Clearly the unions know this with their support of Ed, but do our local councillors? Is this too little too late for Scunthorpe? Here at VisitScunthorpe.Com we sincerely hope not, but far too many people accuse our local councillors of not listening to public opinion, of being out of touch with what people want, and of maintaining the status quo in the face of adverse public opinion. To date the labour movement has been blinded by its own media presence, the attitude of 1997 "We must get in to power regardless" has led us not only to financial and economic crisis, but also to an illegal war, world wide alienation, and the disenfranchisement of a significant core of Labour voters. Its time for Labour to reunite with the unions, include the working classes and start to listen to people as opposed to its own media. Failure to do so will undoubtedly lead to more shock election results. The only people who have believed Labour's message over recent years have been those representing the Labour movement, and protecting their own interests. All in all its some what reminiscent of the Emperors new clothes, lets hope the new emperor can leave the past behind. Update - Correction Just had an update from Mick Grant via his blog which states that he did support and indeed vote for Ed Milliband and not David. This is not particularly clear as in his own article on the 16th August, instead of showing his support and stating that he would be voting for Ed, Mick instead said "I thought Ed spoke honestly and whilst I didnt agree with everything he said, I thought it was a good session with some good questions" So it would appear that an apology is needed, Mick, we got it wrong, I should have said that Some of our local councillors, CLP and Local MP declared their support for David. What I will maintain from the earlier article though is that if the Labour movement is to succeed in next May's elections then they must start to pay more attention to the rank and file, not just Labour members but the public too, and this, I believe, is something with Ed will do better than David.

I think you'll find most Labour councillors DID vote for Ed. The CLP recommended David, they did not vote for him. Also the CLP isn't just made up of councillors but the many ordinary party members who far outweigh them. There are probably hundreds of members as opposed to a handful of councillors. Think you're being a bit harsh here Thoades!

Perhaps you are right Glad, I've had a re-read, but think that the overall direction of the article is right. As for councillors voting for Ed or Dave, well Nic Dakin delcared publically for David on the 26th August and Mick Grant said that he didnt agree with him on the 16th of August. Granted they may have changed their minds since, but I'm basing that comment on what these people have stated publically.

A reasonable and fair assumption that I suspect many more of us were equally drawn into believing. I note the typically astute and lieboresque absence of a full and open qualification from all concerned as to which Milliband was their 1st and/or 2nd preference in their voting for the party leader?! Harsh perhaps. However, in the rest of his post, Thoades firmly and squarely hits the final nails in New Labour's "coffin". His assessment of the reasons behind Labour's demise nationally - particularly his prediction of its continuing woes locally- are brutally frank, honest and entirely accurate. And Labour's local disciples (within SCLP and NLC) ignore such assessments at theirs, Scunthorpe's and North Lincolnshire's perils, if they equally do not have the courage, intellect and calibre to accept and take on board such opinions. The really galling fallout - from the disgraceful and shameless MP's expenses scandal; SCLP's lame responses and evident support for their man Morley; and Gordon Clown's boom then bust legacy and election defeat - is that our totally inept, arrogant and disingenuous self serving local Tories are apparently just sitting around, waiting and gloating at their prospects come next May's local council elections.
