Dirty Pig Campaign

23 September 2010 by Hamst

Back in January 2009 North Lincolnshire Council announced it was one of only 10 councils chosen by the Keep Britain Tidy group in the country to launch a campaign against fast food litter. It was estimated that seven out of ten litter items strewn around towns are fast food cartons. The dirty pig campaign was a national drive to cut the amount of fast food litter on our streets. North Lincolnshire Council was however at the time bucking national trends by reducing litter problems year on year. Laws were and still are in place to deal with litter, and people can be fined 80 for dropping it. However, the council wanted to work in partnership with local businesses and fast food chains to encourage people not to drop their waste food or packaging. It was said food litter is closely related to the growth of the rat and feral pigeon population. The idea of the campaign was to launch a series of posters depicting attractive men and women morphing into pigs after dropping rubbish. The 'dirty pig' campaign was to be aimed at 18 to 24-year-olds who were said to be the main perpetrators who dump take-away cartons and food in the street. The areas to be targets would be Doncaster Road, Ashby High Street and both Lakeside & Gallagher retail parks. This meant business owners displaying anti-litter posters and stocking leaflets, minimising packaging, strict compliance with duty-of-care waste regulations and clearing up their own litter. The posters would be appearing throughout North Lincolnshire in phone boxes, on bus shelter and in restaurants and licensed premises in the form of washroom panels and mirror stickers to give the person looking into the mirror a pig-like appearance. After the campaign had been running for 3 months it was reported that the amount of rubbish being dropped on some North Lincolnshire streets was cut by 39 per cent proving that it had, in some way, made an impact on the littering problem. Do you think more should be done against the littering problem, particularly along Doncaster Road and surrounding areas at the weekends. Should more be done to deter those littering by imposing heavier fines, naming and shaming etc; do the local take-a-ways and fast food restaurants get off too lightly, maybe more onus should be put on them to deter littering. Although many things can be done to help reduce the amount of litter on our streets and everyone should play their part, one things for sure, the street will never be spotless.
