Demolition of the schools former engineering block
The school opened in 1958 at a cost of nearly 200,000 and was the 12th school to be completed in Scunthorpe since the second world war. The school was extended in the 1960s to deal with the growing number of pupils with the addition of a new 3 storey east block and the engineering complex. A pool was added in 1972, though this would be open to public use out of school time and during holidays.
The school had a name change in the early 1990s to South Leys School and again in 2007 when it became Melior South Site after it had merged with Thomas Sumpter School (Melior North Site) as part of the Building Schools for the Future programme. Pupils from the South Site had progressively been transferred to the North Site as part of the transformation whilst a brand new school being built at the North Site in constructed, it is due to open for the Autumn term 2011.
The demolition of the old engineering block at the school, which finally closed its doors for good in July 2010, will be a sad sight for many former pupils, myself included. Part of the school has for many years been home the Education Development Centre and consultation continue to progress with what to do with the rest of the buildings. The local Labour group are proposing to make 2.5m available over the next four years to make the former school a community facility.

Visit Scunthorpe is North Lincolnshire's only truly independent, non commercial, community news web site.
Established in January 2010 we have lots of members with a wide range of views who all contribute
independently with articles of their own.
You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.
Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.
