Updated Article Results of the recorded crime rates have been released for Scunthorpe and North Lincolnshire. Read our article on VisitScunthorpe.Com to understand how they are not reflective of what's really going on!
original article: This is the first of several articles to be published on Visit Scunthorpe where we will be assessing the impact of the recently announced cuts on the community and look to try to find alternatives which may help lessen the blow to those who are most affected by them. Today we look at how policing and crime rates are likely to be affected by reductions to police budgets of 16%. Home owners in Scunthorpe are reminded again of the importance of ensuring that they secure their garden sheds and out buildings following a fresh spate of thefts in the Scunthorpe area. In the early hours of Wednesday morning to suspects were taken in for questioning by police following the discovery of a spate of thefts in the Scunthorpe area which were phoned through to police by local residents. The quick response from front line offices to these kinds of incidents highlights not only the need to protect police numbers on the beat, but also suggests that as money gets tighter people are going to become more desperate and turn to petty crime and soft targets. Speaking about the Cuts announced today, leader of the local council Mark Kirk said: "A 16 per cent cut to the police force will remove valuable PCSOs from the streets. A poll in Wednesday's Scunthorpe Telegraph states people believe crime will rise once cuts to the police force begin and I share those fears." As the austerity measures outlined today begin to take effect, many residents are expressing concern that there will be an increase in crime against home owners, as many thief's consider them to be soft targets. Clearly one of the options available to Humberside Police in order to try to retain police numbers would be to reduce the money spent on public awareness and crime prevention campaigns. This puts the onus on communities in general to be more aware of what's going on in their neighbourhoods and to ensure that gates, cars, garages and outbuildings are locked and protected. There are a range of options which home owners can look at, domestic CCTV systems are relatively cheap, and free software can be downloaded from the internet to allow a basic 20 webcam in a window to become a motion sensitive camera. The Humberside police web site offers advice to home owners on how to better secure their property, as does Crime Stoppers.
