Crosby Public House Saved from Demolition

01 September 2010 by Hamst

North Lincolnshire Council's Planning department have rejected a planning application to demolish the Crosby Public House and instead erect a care home in its place. Planners were concerned about the impact that the 3 story building would have on other existing properties in the area and rejected the proposal due to the fact that suitable drawings showing what this impact would be were not submitted by the developer. Following various articles from readers on the Visit Scunthorpe web site it's refreshing to see that planners are prepared to take in to consideration the views of the local community and will consider the impact of commercial developments and ventures on what little remains of Scunthorpe's original architecture.

IT would be awful to see another landmark Building destroyed in Scunthorpe, whe you consider the wreckage left by teh 60s and 70s planners uou'd think a more sympathetic grant system for re use of older building would be in place instead of Granhts only available for new building .Look at all the new school building going up with |Grant Aid while the same schools can't afford to repair older ones so knock them down. It's New labour and EU madness.I expected the Tories to be the party of common sense ,as was always their mantra but they seem to want to continue this madness

I agree, it would be a travesty for yet another building to be unsympathetically vandalised in the name of progress. I understand and appreciate that re-development is necessary, but I do feel that as grand piece of architecture as this should be saved, or at least incorporated into the design of the new scheme. Perhaps readers could write to the planning committee with a view to saving parts of this building as an example of Scunthorpe at its finest?

Councillor Barkworth's details can be found on VisitScunthorpe's "council" section (designed for just such an event as this!) cllr.darrellbarkworth@northlincs.gov.uk I assume that Hamst is suggesting this as he would like the building protecting in some way? I'd suggest that if readers are saddened by the potential loss of this building that they email Cllr Barkworth, or write to him care of Pitwood house. Other councillors who also form the planning committee are: Cllr.sandrabainbridge@northlincs.gov.uk Cllr.mashookali@northlincs.gov.uk Cllr.TrevorBarker@northlincs.gov.uk Cllr.barrybriggs@northlincs.gov.uk paulinecarlile@aol.com Cllr.JohnCollinson@northlincs.gov.uk cllr.williameckhardt@northlincs.gov.uk Cllr.JohnEngland@northlincs.gov.uk Cllr.MickGrant@northlincs.gov.uk bpaulregan@aol.com Cllr.CarlSherwood@northlincs.gov.uk Cllr.NigelSherwood@northlincs.gov.uk cllr.John.Wardel@northlincs.gov.uk Cllr.DavidWhiteley@northlincs.gov.uk It may be worth while for reader's to register their objections by emailing those members listed above

I read this article with joy, Planners listening to concerns of residents is refreshing. We havent long moved from Cardiff, South Wales, and demolition of pubs was a frequent occurrence. I believe a good pub adds to an areas character and is good for the local community. From moving from South Wales, demolition of pubs with beautiful architecture were lost for ever. I praise careful consideration from planners as once an areas monument buildings are demolished, an area can soon lose its identity.
