Councillor voices concern over job losses

24 May 2011 by Paul Rhoades

In today's blog Mick Grant (Labour councillor for Ashby ward) has voiced his concerns about what could become apparent at tomorrows Council AGM.

The Meeting is scheduled for 10:00 am and is open to the public to attend.

Following job losses announced by TATA steel expected to be in the region of 1,200, Mick is particularly concerned over the potential threat of further job losses this time at the council.

In February the conservative group submitted plans showing a reduction in the budget which according to public sector unions equates to an additional 2,000 jobs being potentially lost at the council.

Speaking to Visit Scunthorpe shortly after the conservatives took control of the council, Conservative MP Andrew Percy told us that it was inevitable that the new leadership would want to produce a new budget, and that this would be done within 90 days.

on his blog today, Mick says "The local newspaper is today speculating there could be more bad news for contractors and public sector workers are already bracing themselves for further job losses. As I told the Sunday Mirror, the trade unions believe up to 2,000 public sector staff could be laid off by the new Tory council and that would prove to be absolutely disastrous for the local community when you add in the news from TATA."

In an earlier interview with Visit Scunthorpe, Labour MP for Scunthorpe Nic Dakin told us that he would be encouraging investment in the renewable's industry and speaking with ministers to try to lessen the impact of the job cuts in every way possible.

North Lincolnshire Coalition of Resistance will be holding a meeting on the 24th of June which Nic will be attending, we'd encourage all readers to try to find the time to attend what will be a very important meeting for local people.
