Council working with police to tackle metal theft

08 August 2011 by Paul Rhoades

Following the theft of led from several council buildings including schools, and the repeated theft of phone cable from rural areas, the council have announced the formation of a Cross Council working group to develop an action plan with Humberside Police to tackle metal theft.

This will be of particular interest to residents of Broughton who have suffered two internet and telephone outages in recent weeks due to the theft of copper cable. This issue was highlighted by Brigg and Goole MP Andrew Percy as a question to David Cameron in MPQ's just before the summer recess.

There has also been the theft of copper cable from railway tracks in the region used to connect signalling equipment which has seen train services halted due to the significant safety threat damaged signalling causes. Both BT and Network Rail have, where possible started replacing traditional copper cables with fiber optic cable which has no cash value where possible, but sources have told us that on the railways this has not prevented theft, as some criminals steeling the cable seem unable to tell the difference between fiber optic and metal!

With scrap metal prices rising 135% since 2009, metal theft has become a "soft target" for a lot of criminal gangs who have in the past risked their own life and limb gaining access to roofs and cutting through live power supplies.

Established in January 2010 we have lots of members with a wide range of views who all contribute independently with articles of their own.

You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.

Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.
