Council Respond To Newspaper Story

08 December 2011 by Hamst

North Lincolnshire Council have issued the following statement in response to a story in the local paper;

The front page story in this week’s Scunthorpe Telegraph ‘The future of our town centre is in your hands’ – is incorrect and misleading.

The paper used the wrong figures from a leaked document.  Despite the council pointing this out, they still ran the story.

The correct figures using the High Street Index that is nationally recognised by the Association of Town Centre Managers are:

  • In January 2011, footfall figures were down 6.8 per cent (not 10.25 per cent Scunthorpe Telegraph quoted)
  • In February 2011, footfall figures were down 10.2 per cent (not 9.98 per cent Scunthorpe Telegraph quoted)
  • In July 2011, footfall figures were down 7.5 per cent (not 9.51 per cent Scunthorpe Telegraph quoted)
  • In October 2011, footfall figures were down 10.2 per cent (not 11.08 per cent Scunthorpe Telegraph quoted)
  • Overall footfall in Scunthorpe is down six per cent for the year.  This compares well to the regional figure that is down by just over five per cent.

To put these figures into context, the National High Street Index also shows that for six months of the year, Scunthorpe Town Centre out performed regional cities, in terms of the annual percentage change in footfall.

The National High Street Index shows that footfall is declining in towns and cities across the UK.

One of the biggest reasons is the rise in Internet shopping.

This year, internet sales are up 16 per cent on last year and are expected to break all records in the run up to Christmas.

People are simply shopping online more rather than visiting their local high street.

Mission Statement

Visit Scunthorpe is North Lincolnshire's only truly independent, non commercial, community news web site.

Established in January 2010 we have lots of members with a wide range of views who all contribute independently with articles of their own.

You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.

Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.

Paul. Founder Visit Scunthorpe.
