Representing the group were Cllr Andrea Davison, Giovani Loperfido, Jenny Fletcher and Paul Rhoades.

The council delegation included Cllr Liz Redfern (leader), Cllr Rob Waltham (Children and Adult Services), Cllr John Briggs (Asset and Estate management), Planning Officer, Environmental Officer.

Following the meeting on the 12th August, the leader of the council was asked to address the following actions:

1 - Locate plans for the pond

2 - Investigate the structure of the pond

3 - Test the mud for health risks

4 - Investigate why the pond had drained.

Plans

Plans for the original construction of the pond were located and showed to the FOAP delegates. It clearly shows the lake with a small island in the middle as described by the former chairman of Scunthorpe Model Boat Club who was responsible for the removal of the island and the conversion of the pond to its current structure.

The plan does not show any form of feed pipe going into the pond despite the fact an alleged feed pipe can be clearly seen, which it is claimed by the Model Boat Club chairman was added later to provide a source of water for the pond.

Structure
With regards to the structure of the pond, council officers were of the opinion that the pond has a concrete edge and mud sides, complete investigation can not be undertaken until the mud is removed, but the officer concerned speculated that there may be a concrete plinth in the middle of the pond designed to support the weight of the island which was removed in the 1980's.

Mud
The council reported that the mud had been tested and was found to be hazardous to health. Biohazard signs are to be erected and the local police asked to check the fences for signs of damage on a regular basis. The council is currently investigating what will need to be done to remove the hazard.

Investigation
The council have investigated why the pond has drained. The investigated the feed pipe and found that it runs for 140 meters and is then blocked. The officers were unable to determine what fed the pipe. The speculated that changes to the local water table may be responsible for the pond drying up due to its structure and location.

The council are currently looking at what can be done to remedy the situation, including providing an alternative facility.

Meeting
Delegates for Friends of Ashby Pond invited the council to make a presentation of their plans to the public at the next Friends of Ashby Pond meeting, schedule for the 13th September 6:30 pm at the Beckwood Pub in Scunthorpe.

A very good point fans, its excellent to see the community, ward councillors and the council its self working very hard to meet the needs of local residents.

Democracy in Action as you say, it should be.
